Tickled Pink

Congratulations to Jim Viggars, Head of Meat Quality and Buying Manager at Asda, who has been awarded Breast Cancer Campaign’s “Employee Fundraiser of the Year” after raising £5 million for breast cancer charities.

Jim Viaggars

He was presented with the award at Breast Cancer Campaign’s annual reception at the House of Lords – which is held to recognise and say thank you for the amazing achievements of its supporters.

Jim has worked at Asda for 28 years and has been dedicated to fundraising for our Tickled Pink campaign. In the past five years, Jim has raised money by taking part in a variety of fundraising challenges and getting colleagues involved. These efforts include leading a team of twenty ‘butchers on bikes’ on a two day cycle ride from Smithfield meat market in London to Rungis market in Paris – raising £67,000! He also broke a Guinness World Record in 2010 for kayaking across Loch Ness in just five hours and 19 minutes.

Our new gingerbread lady will be launching in Asda cafes later this summer in aid of Tickled Pink – and we’re asking our Facebook fans to help us name her!

Gingerbread lady

Although we’ve offered gingerbread men and even gingerbread reindeer at Christmas before this will be the first time we’ve put a gingerbread lady on the menu!

We hope she’ll be a big hit with kids – each gingerbread lady will be £1 with 10p going to breast cancer charities.

Tickled Pink

After 16 years of fundraising, today we can announce we’ve raised a massive £30 million to help fight cancer through our Tickled Pink campaign.

Tickled Pink

We’d like to say a massive thank you and well done to all our customers and colleagues who have helped us to raise this fantastic amount for Breast Cancer Campaign and Breast Cancer Care since Tickled Pink started in 1996. Your support has helped to raise awareness and money for the treatment of breast cancer in the UK.

Zoe Hardman, TV presenter and Tickled Pink Ambassador, explains how the money raised by Tickled Pink has helped the two charities.

Breast Cancer Campaign has made an exciting new research development that could improve the outcomes for thousands of women diagnosed with a certain type of breast cancer.

Dr Rob Clarke

Work by Breast Cancer Campaign fellow Dr Rob Clarke, funded by Tickled Pink, suggests that breast cancer stem cells from patients can be directly targeted with a new drug in development, effectively stopping the root of the breast cancer within the tumour.

Dr Clarke’s new findings give hope that new treatments could be developed, which would knock out cancer stem cells responsible for breast cancer recurring and spreading.

The research focuses on HER-2 positive – a form of breast cancer which affects roughly 30% of those diagnosed with the disease. Dr Clarke’s new approach also indicates that targeting a particular molecule has the potential to stop all types of breast cancer recurring and spreading as well as other cancers and so may benefit many other patients.

Dr Clarke said: “Breast cancer stem cells hold the key to vital new approaches and treatments to help us beat breast cancer once and for all. We’re making progress every day but we can only get there with charities like Breast Cancer Campaign and their support of our work.”

Dr Clarke was the first breast cancer researcher in the UK to be awarded a Breast Cancer Campaign Scientific Fellowship. Together with co-author of Clinical Cancer Research Journal’s new findings, Dr Gillian Farnie, he has been funded by our Tickled Pink campaign – which contributes £1 million to breast stem cell research in the UK every year.
