Choc and Awe

Asda stores nearly run out of stock of HERSHEY’S and REESE’S products as demand soars

Products made by American confectionery giant, The Hershey Company has taken sweet-toothed British shoppers by storm this week, with sales at Asda already outstripping perennial favourites from leading brands. Some buyers have said that they’ll go to incredible lengths to keep Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cups and Hershey’s® Cookies ‘n Crème to themselves, with one visitor to Asda’s Facebook page saying that she’ll even hide them in the vegetable drawer of the fridge.

Hershey’s brand has been an iconic staple in the US for more than 100 years and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have been the perfect combination of chocolate and peanut butter since 1928. However, both products have recently begun to make an ever-lasting impression on UK consumers. New products, including Hershey’s® Cookies ‘n’ Cream bar, Hershey’s® Kisses Cookies ‘n’ Cream, Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cups and Reese’s® Peanut Butter Cup Miniatures have been on sale in all Asda stores for several days and and all stores are seeing record sales for these iconic American products.

“We have been gobsmacked by the reaction to the launch of the new Hershey’s products in-store and online”, said Asda’s head of chocolate, Rob Benyon. “The stock is flying off the shelves, pausing at the checkout and making its way into shoppers’ mouths in record time. We’ve doubled the number of Asda Facebook fans in a week on the back of this launch, which is unprecedented.”

Asda ran a promotion on its Facebook page offering fans the chance to win a year’s supply of the Hershey’s and Reese’s products.

To promote the arrival of the new products, visitors to the Asda facebook page were invited to take part in a free prize draw to ‘Find the Golden Kiss’ by clicking on their favourite Hershey’s or Reese’s product for a chance to win a year’s supply of chocolate.

Asda also asked its Facebook fans: "If I won a year’s supply of chocolate I would share it with _____________”. Hundreds of people responded – some of the replies so far include:

“My baby bump for the next 7 months, then may let my husband have some after that.”
“With everyone at work and sabotage their New Year diets!”
“My invisible friend.”
“The person I see in the mirror.”
“My cat (she hates chocolate).”
“I’d give them out to random people on the street (after asking if they don’t have any allergies) to give a little sunshine to their days.”
“Myself, I’d hide them in the veg drawer where nobody dare venture!”
