ASDA named Britain's most innovative employer

ASDA’s 165,000 colleagues are today celebrating after the supermarket was named ‘Innovative Employer of the Year’ at this year’s prestigious Oracle Retail Week Awards staged in London last night [19th March 2009].

ASDA won the accolade for its “comprehensive suite of strategies and people innovations”, beating off strong competition from Sainsbury’s, Gap, Carphone Warehouse and Hotel Chocolat.

As well as highlighting ASDA’s low turnover and high retention rates, the award winning entry impressed judges with its “highly successful colleague based initiatives”, including its commitment to colleague health and its reward and recognition schemes – these include suggestion programmes and regular listening groups.

The annual awards, which celebrate the best in retailing in both the multiple and independent sectors, are firmly established as the Oscars of the retail sector with intense competition in every category.

Caroline Massingham, ASDA’s People Director said: "We’re absolutely delighted to win this award. It reaffirms our belief that ASDA is one of the best places to work in the UK.

“It is thanks to the continued hard work of all of our store and depot colleagues who are dedicated to saving ASDA money, so that we can deliver outstanding value and customer service to millions of shoppers across the UK.”

ASDA’s winning entry hinged on the following key initiatives:

  • ASDA’s Year of Colleague Health – the initiative included a year of activities to help colleagues and their families live healthier lives, such as a slimathon, which 3,500 colleagues have signed up to, and the provision of new health benefits.
  • ASDA Stars Colleague recognition programme – the initiative ensures outstanding performance in stores and depots across the country is recognised and rewarded.
  • ASDA’s diversity road show – the initiative ensures that all of our colleagues fulfil their potential and that store teams reflect the make-up of their local community.
