Today (Wednesday 12th December) Asda announced that its cutting 1p a litre off the price of unleaded and 2ppl off diesel at all its fuel stations across the UK, bringing welcome relief to drivers preparing for Christmas.
From tomorrow morning (Thursday 13th December) drivers filling up at any of Asda’s 213 forecourts nationwide will benefit from the retailer’s new national price cap, meaning motorists will pay no more than 128.7 (was 129.7) pence per litre for unleaded and 135.7 (was 137.7) pence per litre for diesel.
A survey carried out by the RAC say over 77% of people are expected to travel across the country to visit family and friends, with the average household travelling approximately 259 miles throughout December.
With average UK pump prices standing at 132.81 ppl for petrol and 140.97 ppl for diesel, motorists will save an average of £2.25 on unleaded and £2.90 on diesel this weekend by filling up at Asda. (Based on 55 litre tank)
The retailer reacted quickly to the latest reductions in wholesale costs and immediately passed the savings on to its customers. Asda remains the only supermarket to have unleaded prices below the 130ppl mark in ALL of its filling stations.
Andy Peake, petrol trading director said: "With Christmas just around the corner, and finances tighter than ever, we’re pleased we can do our bit to make our customers’ hard-earned cash go a little further.
“We’re putting money back in their pockets regardless of where they fill up. Other scrooge retailers should share the Christmas spirit and follow our lead.”
RAC technical director David Bizley said: "It really is starting to look like Christmas, not only have we persuaded the Chancellor to scrap the January 3p fuel duty increase, but now Asda are making festive travel more affordable. The icing on the cake will be if other retailers follow where Asda leads.
“An RAC poll found that three quarters (77%) of people plan to drive an average of 260 miles to visit friends or family this Christmas, covering some four billion miles, so this is good news for them at the most expensive time of the year.”
