Asda coo David Cheesewright appointed CEO and president of Wal-Mart Canada

ASDA announced today that its COO David Cheesewright has been appointed President and CEO of Wal-Mart Canada. He will start his new role on February 1, 2008.

Mr Cheesewright previously served as Chief Operating Officer for Wal-Mart Canada between 2004 and 2005 before returning to ASDA as Chief Operating Officer, helping deliver ASDA’s turnaround strategy.

Commenting on his appointment, Andy Bond said:

“Dave has done a fantastic job helping me get the business back on track and I would like to personally thank him for all his hard work and dedication to ASDA. His appointment to Wal-Mart Canada reflects the strength and achievements of the ASDA leadership team, and I’m sure the Canadian business will go from strength to strength with him in charge.”

Dave Cheesewright added:

“I’m delighted to accept this new role and am looking forward to the challenge. I have really enjoyed my time at ASDA, it has set me in good stead.

I’m also looking forward to returning to Canada to get stuck into the job of taking the business to the next level."

David Cheesewright’s career spans more than 20 years in the retail and manufacturing sectors.

He joined ASDA in 1999 and over the past eight years held leadership positions in operations, merchandising, logistics, strategy, and format development.

From 2004 to 2005 Mr. Cheesewright served as Chief Operating Officer for Wal-Mart Canada based in Mississauga before returning to ASDA as COO. Prior to his career with ASDA, he held a range of key positions with Mars in sales, marketing, supply chain and manufacturing.

The current Wal-Mart Canada President and CEO, Mario Pilozzi, is retiring after seven years at the helm of Wal-Mart Canada and a remarkable 45 years with the company.
