Britain’s leading lowest price supermarket rounded off one of its best years with a solid Christmas trading performance that beat its sales expectation despite some industry predictions that 2008 would be the worst Christmas for retailers for more than 20 years.

In the seven days leading up to Christmas ASDA’s 356 stores served 1.3 million more customers than the previous year, with December 23rd its biggest ever trading day with sales significantly ahead of 2007’s busiest day. Over the same seven-day period 8 stores had sales of over £4 million (2007: 6), 47 stores had sales in excess of £3 million (2007: 41) and 176 had sales of more than £2 million (2007: 159) on a year on year basis.

The average UK family is £7 a week worse off relative to November 2007 – an improvement of £4 from its lowest point in September.

The average UK household had £135 a week to spend on recreation in November, 5.1 per cent lower than a year ago, but the highest since the £136 a week income tracker recorded in May.

A sharp drop in the cost of fuel helped reduce the burden of the cost of living. Petrol prices fell by 9.3 pence per litre in November, as overall transport costs fell by 2.6 per cent.

ASDA has delivered an early Christmas present to Britain’s motorists as they start to head off for the festive holidays – another cut in petrol prices.

Petrol will be down to 85.9p a litre and diesel 97.9ppl from tomorrow.

The move means a typical driver is now saving £17.60 each time they fill up – and with the AA predicting 11% of drivers will notch up more than 100 miles visiting family and friends this Christmas it will be a welcome saving.*

ASDA President and CEO, Andy Bond, has today predicted that the recession will fundamentally change consumer behaviour and that retailers who fail to adapt to the new reality won’t survive.

Speaking in London at a seminar organised by ASDA and Cebr to discuss the impact of the recession on consumer spending he said:

“We can already see how changing attitudes are affecting customers’ shopping habits.

Consumers are not prepared to pay a premium when they cannot taste the difference*. The era of conspicuous consumption is over. Saving money by cutting out waste of all kinds will be the priority. I don’t see this as being a short-term response to the recession but a fundamental shift that will see the emergence of a new breed of customer.

They say rubbing Buddha’s tummy brings good luck – and it certainly has for the winner of ASDA’s latest beer competition.

Lucky Beer, which comes in a unique Buddha-shaped bottle, beat off a range of other lagers to win the contest.

Now the Australian-brewed beer will be available at ASDA from January, the first time it will have been on sale at a UK supermarket.

AS THE Chancellor’s rise in fuel duty continues to cause controversy today, ASDA is set to be the ‘darling’ of UK motorists once again with its 11th consecutive cut in fuel prices since July.

Unleaded will come down to 88.9ppl, while diesel is reduced to 102.9ppl – the lowest price in the UK. These prices were last seen at the pumps in March 2007.
