Asda’s packaging purge to deliver ‘Green Rollbacks’

ASDA announced plans today to plough £10million into lowering prices as a result of reducing packaging on own brand products.

ASDA has taken the industry lead in removing excess packaging and has promised to ring fence all of the money saved to go back into customer savings.

In May ASDA will introduce ‘Green Rollbacks’ which follows on from ASDA’s wider commitment to reduce own label packaging by 25% by the end of 2008 – that’s 27,000 tonnes across 500 product lines.

Asda is an early moover with cow welfare

Supermarket ASDA is helping its dedicated UK dairy farmers with discounted pedometers to be fitted to their milk cows.

The pedometers, or bovine activity meters as they are technically known, are leg mounted and monitor the steps taken by the animal.

When passed over an antenna in the parlour, data is transferred to log against the cows 10 day average activity reading.

An increase in steps will identify cows in heat without any visual heat detection thus maximising milk production.

Bra wars - Asda invests millions to go for bust

ASDA announced today (Monday 28 January 2008) that it will no longer penalise its bigger busted customers by ending the practice of charging larger ladies more money for their bras.

The move sees an investment of over £4m per year by ASDA's clothing arm, George and means all of its bra wearing customers, over ten million in total, will pay the same price whatever cup size from A through to F.

Currently many retailers charge more to accommodate ample bosoms, a difference of between £2 and £6 at George, and up to £10 at other outfitters depending on cup size. more Posted by AsdaPressRelease on 27 January 2008, 00:00

Asda backs calls for consistent approach to nutritional labelling

On the day that the Government published its obesity strategy, ASDA today (23rd January 2008) backed the call for the entire food industry to adopt a consistent approach to nutritional labelling.

The supermarket also announced it had become the first retailer to hit the Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) strict salt reduction targets, removing 396 tonnes of salt from its 12,000 own brand products two years ahead of the 2010 deadline.

In July 2007, ASDA launched a dual labelling system, combining the benefits of ‘traffic lights’ with GDAs, over and above the Food Standard Agency’s (FSA) recommendations.

Today [10th January, 2008] ASDA announced it would be the first retailer to fine drivers for the misuse of disabled and parent and child parking bays in its car parks.

All profits generated from the fines will go back to baby charity Tommy’s and Motability, the national disability charity providing the leading car scheme for disabled people.

The move which will see abusers fined £60 for parking in parent and child and disabled spaces, comes into force from Monday 14th January 2008 and follows a successful trial last year in the north of England.

When surveyed four out of five ASDA customers said they believed rolling out the scheme nationwide was the right thing to do.
