Three generations cook a family roast in the new Asda kitchen

We invited three generations of the same family to cook a roast with Asda chef Mark Richmond in our new Innovation kitchens at Asda House in Leeds.

Grandmother Patricia, mother Angela and daughter Donna, who are all enthusiastic chefs, swapped tips with Mark – and discovered a few shortcuts to the perfect roast.

Donna, 26, says her mum cooks the best Sunday dinner in their family – “She probably cooks the best roast, her mashed potatoes are definitely the best – and the Yorkshire puddings too when they rise!”

Mark, who has years of experience working in Michelin-starred restaurants, showed them how to cook three different types of meat: Boneless leg of pork, topside of beef and leg of lamb, with side dishes including home-made pork stuffing, roast beetroot and dauphinoise potatoes.

He suggested cooking Yorkshire puddings in beef dripping for a richer flavour and he showed them how to make pork crackling by scoring the skin with a sharp knife, seasoning with sea salt and rubbing in a little oil.

Mum Angela’s top tip for the perfect roast is to cook the chicken upside down then turn it over and cook at a high temperature for twenty minutes to crisp up the skin.

The family thoroughly enjoyed their day – and Angela says she now knows how to make her Yorkshire puddings rise every time!
