Team Asda hurdle the language barrier for international visitors

Ali Mohammed

We’ve been busy creating a one-of-a-kind scheme to support international customers at a time when thousands are visiting the UK.

We have ensured that we have more than 100 multilingual colleagues on hand in each of our 12 selected ‘language specialist’ stores in London. More than 50 different languages are spoken in these stores – from French to Creole, we are always happy to help!

Happy to Help badges, written in the languages spoken by our colleagues, are worn to make sure tourists feel welcome, as well as creating opportunities for our multilingual colleagues to put their skills to use – all with the aim of making shoppers’ experiences quicker, easier and more enjoyable.

Ali and customers

One such multi-talented colleague is Ali Mohammed, an acting section leader at Asda Clapham Junction, who speaks five different languages.

He sais: "There is so much excitement around London at the moment, so it’s great to feel like I am playing my part by giving visitors the extra help they might need.

“We have been teaching each other how to say ‘Happy to Help’ in lots of different languages and everyone is proud to share what they know.”

Our helpful spirit doesn’t stop there as we’ve also introduced “sprint through here” banners to ensure customers get through the tills in world record times!

Our colleagues are also sporting Union Jack gilets to add to the spirit of the occasion while creating an enjoyable experience and making shopping for our international guests a breeze.
