Raymond enjoys weekly shop with help from Asda Larne colleagues

When Raymond Semple first visited our Larne store four years ago he asked one of our colleagues for a little help as he’s registered blind.

He now does his weekly shop there – and colleagues like Penny Lindsay love having a laugh and a chat with him as they take him round the store finding the things he needs.

Raymond, who’s 64, said: "They are very good with me, very helpful, and what they do is so important for me as I live on my own in quite a rural location.

“Each week I have a shopping list in my head and as they take me round the store I tell them the sort of things I’m looking for. They also tell me about new products that are on the shelves.

“It’s good fun coming to the store. I enjoy it – we have a joke and a laugh as we go round.”

Raymond lives six miles away from Asda Larne and is brought in to do his shopping every Tuesday by a local community transport charity who recently received a cheque from our Ballyclare store through the Green Token Giving scheme.

Penny and Raymond

Penny, who’s worked at Asda Larne since it opened seven years ago, said: "Four years ago Raymond came in and he asked for a bit of help with his shopping. Of course we said yes and it’s gone from there.

“He comes in every Tuesday and often it will be me or my colleague Mandy Linton who help him out. He has got to know both of us and we’ve got to know him which he appreciates, and we know the sort of bits he’s looking for when he comes in.

“He’s a happy wee man and is a very sociable person – he loves coming in and saying hello and we love seeing him and helping him out.”

Raymond is able to visit the store thanks to South Antrim Community Transport, who support people in rural areas who may otherwise be isolated.

Lesley Millar from the group said: "Raymond is an absolute ray of sunshine and has a great sense of humour. He really enjoys his trips to Asda and our service has also enabled him to meet other people in the area he wouldn’t otherwise have met.

“We have a great relationship with Asda – a while ago we received a cheque from the Green Token Giving Scheme from the Ballyclare store which we were very grateful for.”
