Little baby Jaxon first to try new prem baby collection from George

Little baby Jaxon is one of the first to try out our new premature baby collection from George – and we think he looks a bobby dazzler in his tiny blue vest!

Mum Shona Lewendon posted this lovely photo (above) on our Facebook page after we announced the launch of the collection. It’s the first range of affordable clothing in the UK designed especially for babies weighing 1lbs to 5lbs. 10% from the sale of each garment goes to Tommy’s.

It seems little Jaxon is already a trendsetter – now all the other mums at the special care baby unit in Glasgow want one too!

The tiny vests

Jaxon was born in Glasgow on February 16th at 26 weeks and five days, weighing just 1.58 lbs. Shona had been rushed to hospital with dangerously high blood pressure caused by pre-eclampsia.

Shona already has three boys from a previous relationship who were all a healthy weight when they were born so Jaxon’s unscheduled arrival was a big shock for her and fiancé Tony.

“Jaxon was born so quickly I hadn’t even had time to buy anything,” she says. "I needed a nursing bra so I popped into Asda Govan on one of my hospital visits.

“I stumbled up the escalator half asleep and right at the top was the new display of prem baby clothing. I couldn’t believe it! They’d only put them out that day.”

Until then Jaxon had not been able to wear anything other than a nappy and had been grabbing at the wires and monitors on his chest.

“He kept pulling off the little monitors and setting off the alarms!” says Shona. "Now they’re safely tucked away under the vest so he can’t get to them.

“I bought him the smallest size vests and tried it on him… with the help of his nappy it fits him! This for me is progress! A step towards normality.”

Jaxon’s brothers Reece, 14, Tyler, 7, and Shane, 4, are extremely proud and can’t wait for him to come home – especially Shane who is taking his new “big brother” duties very seriously!

“He wants to know everything – what he’s had for lunch, when he’s coming home. He knows he came out of my tummy too early and says ‘Stop being mean mummy – put him back in!’”

Jaxon is likely to stay in hospital until his due date – May 20th. He’s doing really well and Shona says he’s “very feisty – always active.”

She was able to hold him for the first time this week. “It was amazing, overwhelming. I cuddled him for about half an hour – it felt like just a few seconds! The nurse said he must have recognised my heartbeat because he was much calmer and more settled than he had been.”

Shona has already recommended the vests to other mums and says she will be popping back for more.

“They are really easy to put on. He didn’t even bat an eyelid. The nurse simply lifted him up on one side – it doesn’t need to go over his head. They’re really good quality and they wash well. The nurse was impressed and said they don’t have the velcro that some others do which can wear off after washing.”

George’s prem baby collection is available at 70 Asda stores with prices starting at £3 for a baby jacket or £5 for a pack of three bodysuits. You can also buy online and have it delivered to your local store using our Click and Collect service.
