The apple that tastes like custard - the most delicious fruit on earth?

Custard apple from Asda

If you’re looking for something a bit different for one of your “five a day” fruits we’ve got the answer – an apple that tastes like custard!

The Cherimoya is popular in central America, Asia and Spain – and now we’re bringing it over to the UK and stocking it in 118 Asda stores. You can get a pack of two for £2.47.

Nicknamed the “custard apple”, the Cherimoya has a distinctive sweet flavour and sherbert texture. When the American author Mark Twain came across it in Hawaii in 1866 he called it “the most delicious fruit known to man”.

The flesh can be eaten straight from the fruit – slice off the top and scoop it out with a spoon. It can also be used to make juices, frozen and eaten as a sorbet or used instead of strawberries when served with Champagne.

Everyone who tries it has a different way of describing the taste – toffee-flavoured custard, tropical fruit-flavoured sweets, bubblegum and a cross between a strawberry and a banana. If you try one tell us what you think of it!
