We love this home sewing project - from duvet cover to summer dress!

Asda customer Gem loves our “pin-up” duvet cover so much she decided to wear it!

Gem, 32, sent us this photo of her proudly wearing the finished dress, styled with a belt from her mum and sandals from George.

The talented dressmaker told us: “I am a huge fan of pinups so originally bought this to actually be bed linen. I washed it through (like I do everything new) and then decided actually I wanted to wear it not sleep under it.”

Our George Home pin-up duvet

The duvet cover is one of the most popular designs in our new George Home collection – prices from just £10.

Gem started teaching herself dressmaking in 2010 and now makes outfits for herself and her family. She hopes she can turn her passion for sewing into a career when her children are older. Gem and husband Craig have two children – Cordelia, aged three, and Xavier, 16 months. The family live in Elgin where Craig is a security colleague at our Elgin store.

Dress in progress

“I don’t have very much spare time but any I do have is spent sewing, reading and learning about sewing and blogging,” says Gem. “I am a slight ‘fabricaholic’ so I look for fabric everywhere! I buy online a lot – in shops, from Facebook groups, eBay, Etsy, charity shops and now at Asda. I really wish Asda had fabric sections like I believe some Walmarts do.”

Gem believes home sewing is growing in popularity thanks to shows like the Great British Sewing Bee. “In my life sewing is huge! I am a member of the blogging community and quite a few Facebook groups solely dedicated to sewing. This is fantastic as it has lead to many new friendships.”
