Age is no barrier for our Wigan store's 91-year-old porter Tom
Our much-loved colleague Tom Brogan is still providing fantastic customer service at Asda Wigan at the age of 91.
Great-grandad Tom, who served during the Second World War, has no plans to retire from his job as a porter at Asda Wigan.
He first got a job as the porter at the store in 1988. He retired in 1996 but continued to shop at the store with his late wife Joan. Just before Christmas 1997, colleagues asked him if he was interested in returning on a three-month temporary contract – and he’s stayed ever since.
He works three mornings a week collecting trollies and helping customers with their shopping and says he has no problem working outside.
He said: "It’s so good to get out and meet people. I really enjoy chatting to customers. When they first find out I’m 91 they get a bit of a shock but they still call me ‘lad’. They say ‘pass me a trolley please lad’ with a smile on their face. I get on really well with all the colleagues who are really friendly and supportive.
“I’m healthy and active – I look after myself. I say ‘everything in moderation’. I don’t smoke but I have a drink now and again.”
When asked about retirement, he said: "I’ll know when it’s time to retire – it could be tomorrow or it could be a while yet, if I’m lucky enough to have my health I’ll keep working for as long as I can.
“I’m used to bad weather and I just enjoy being out in the fresh air.”
He started his working life in 1939 when he was just 14, working at an iron foundry – and was called up to serve in the Armed Forces between 1943 and 1947. Tom was based on the South Coast as a gunner in the Royal Artillery.
The store’s Customer Trading Manager Damien Moore said: "Tom absolutely excels at everything he does – he gives fantastic service to our customers.
“He’s a real character at the store and people love the service he gives.”
We had an amazing response on Facebook back in August 2015 when we posted about colleagues making this brilliant cake to wish Tom a happy 90th birthday. Hundreds of people got in touch to say how fit and well Tom looks, as well as to wish him many happy returns.
Asda Wigan’s People Manager Tracy Forrest said Tom is really popular with colleagues and customers.
“Tom does a great job – he’s really friendly, always smiling and has loads of time for people, colleagues and customers alike,” said Tracy.
“He’s really popular and certainly doesn’t look his age. Lots of our regular customers know him and I think they would be very surprised to hear he is 91.”
