Smiles all round at Washington store's coffee morning for elderly

Elderly guests enjoyed a cuppa and a catch-up in our Washington store’s cafe after being invited in by Community Champion Maureen, who was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list for all the work she does with local groups.

Around 30 members of Age UK Sunderland, who Maureen regularly volunteers with, met up for the coffee morning.

Maureen and other colleagues handed out treats from the bakery and served refreshments, then chatted to the guests.

Maureen said: “It was great to invite such a friendly group of people down to our cafe for the morning. The pastries, coffees and conversation went down a treat with everyone.”

Age UK Sunderland has been supporting the elderly throughout Tyne and Wear for over 60 years, helping 2,000 older people every week. The charity runs weekly lunch clubs inviting members to socialise over food and drink.
Support worker Jacklyn Dodds said: "We were thrilled to be invited to Asda for the coffee morning. Our members really enjoyed getting to know the team and the pastries were delicious.

“On behalf of everyone here at Age UK Sunderland, we’d like to thank the Asda team for their kind support.”
