Elderly guests enjoyed a cuppa and a catch-up in our Washington store’s cafe after being invited in by Community Champion Maureen, who was recently awarded the British Empire Medal in the Queen’s birthday honours list for all the work she does with local groups.

Around 30 members of Age UK Sunderland, who Maureen regularly volunteers with, met up for the coffee morning.

Maureen and other colleagues handed out treats from the bakery and served refreshments, then chatted to the guests.

There were smiles all round as colleagues from our Wrexham store joined hundreds of people for a fun community carnival in aid of Tickled Pink.

The event is organised every year by the store’s community champion Mary Williams and this year several of her colleagues helped out too. The event raised more than £1,000 to support Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Now.

Our Washington store’s fantastic Community Champion Maureen Wallwork was on hand to help out at the first ever Springwell Village 1940s weekend.

Asda colleagues help out at Springwell Village 1940s weekend

Maureen, and Asda Gateshead Community Champion Lynn Ivison, joined in with thousands of people from the local community to get into the swing of the weekend – helping kids make ration packs and joining in with a picnic in the park.

The free event was organised by Springwell Village Community Venue and the Bowes Railway heritage site and saw local people come together to commemorate the history of World War Two and the heritage of the village.

Our Aberdeen Beach store’s colleagues stepped in to help when a local nursery’s giant Asda gnome was destroyed by vandals.

Four-year-old Louise McGillivray (pictured above, second left) was one of the children who was upset after their gnome was damaged and mentioned it to her uncle David Wright, who’s a section leader at the store.

He spoke to the store’s community champion Erin Campbell, and the pair arranged to personally deliver two new gnomes to Bramble Brae Nursery – to the delight of the children.
