Community colleagues team up to help athletes at Great North Run

Four of our community champions from the North East were on hand to support some of the thousands of runners who took part in the Great North Run.

Colleagues helping out

Lynn Ivison from our Gateshead store joined Maureen Wallwork from Washington, Mel Foster from Benton and Michelle Castledine from Gosforth to cheer on the athletes.

They then joined volunteers from St Oswald’s Hospice to offer the runners much-needed refreshments and book them in for massages after they’d crossed the finishing line.

The annual event saw thousands of people take on the half-marathon course which begins in Newcastle and ends in South Shields.

Michelle said: "The atmosphere on the day was amazing and our tent was really busy. It was great to support such a brilliant event with colleagues who are based in the area.

“Our role was to make sure the runners were refreshed – our store had helped out by donating ice pops. We then got them booked in for a massage in the tent if they needed one.

“Over 400 runners raised money for St Oswald’s Hospice on the day – it’s a fantastic local charity.”
