Pensioners enjoy assisted shop with help from Lynn and Guides

Our colleagues at our Gateshead store laid on afternoon tea and a special assisted shop for a group of local pensioners.

Girl Guides chatted to the customers at the event, which was organised by the store’s Community Champion Lynn Ivison.

Lynn arranges the special shopping visit twice a year with the group, who attend events at the local Salvation Army community church.

Girls from 1st Winlaton Guides and colleagues, including our Washington store’s Community Champion Maureen Wallwork, helped the customers and chatted to them in the store’s café afterwards while serving refreshments.

“It was another lovely event,” said Lynn. "The guests loved it – they felt really special.

“It was great to see the youngsters sitting down and spending time chatting to the elderly guests too. It really bridged the age gap and was wonderful to see.”

Chatting in the café

The Guides received their community badge for helping out on the day, and Denise Watson from 1st Winlaton Guides said: "The girls can’t wait for the next event – they absolutely loved it.

“It gives them a chance to have a good chat with people in the community they probably wouldn’t otherwise meet – they found out one of the ladies used to be a Guide herself.

“Guiding is all about helping the community which ties in perfectly with this event.”
