Background

Since 2008 Asda has partnered with leading sports charity SportsAid to provide funding and support to over 1,300 talented British athletes through the Asda Athletes programme. Over the past four years Asda has given over £1million to SportsAid athletes.

We provide financial and practical support to the next generation of British sporting talent. In doing so, we try to alleviate some of the pressure on parents and guardians, whilst helping the athletes to develop their careers at the same time. There are opportunities to meet famous SportsAid alumni, be taught about how best to use social media, and workshops with some of the country’s top sport psychologists.

All athletes are partnered with a local Asda store which gives them an opportunity to raise additional funds in-store. These funds can be used towards the costs of their sport, whether it be travel, training or competition expenses. It is really important to us that our athletes build strong relationships with their partnered store, because as well as giving our them another avenue for financial support, we want to help raise their profile in the local community and build support for the athletes among colleagues and customers.

As well as the chance to fundraise, we give all the athletes we support the chance to qualify for a top-up award at the end of the year. This is subject to them completing a minimum of three blogs on www.asda.com/athletes and visiting their partnered store at least twice during the year. This might be to go in and fundraise or to accompany and support an Asda colleague with the community work they do outside of the store.

About SportsAid

SportsAid is a leading sports charity which raises money to help talented athletes become the stars of British sport. Since 1976, when the charity was first established, SportsAid has given financial support and recognition to talented young sportsmen and women when they need it the most – at the start of their journey to international success. It is the first organisation to recognise their talent, often when their parents are their only sponsors. SportsAid has distributed more than £30 million to athletes throughout Britain and gives around 2,000 awards every year. To find out more visit www.sportsaid.org.uk.
