Blogger Matt and his family try the Asda Price Guarantee

Matt Hall, Laura Dixon and baby Olivia try the Asda Price Guarantee

Our Asda Price Guarantee has been going for a few weeks now and millions of people have already discovered how much they’ve saved by shopping at Asda. We guarantee you can do your weekly shop at Asda cheaper than any of the other major supermarkets and if not we’ll give you a voucher for the difference plus a penny.

We asked Matt Hall and his young family to try it out for themselves. Matt, 29, is an IT engineer who writes a food blog in his spare time called “FoodForFriendsYeah!”. He loves cooking and his blog helps people share their family recipes from around the world.

He and his girlfriend Laura Dixon, 31, have just had their first baby, Olivia, who is just three weeks old. As a brand new family they took up our Price Guarantee challenge and you can read what they discovered on Matt’s blog.

Has the music in our latest ad got you humming? Here's why!

The music in our latest TV advert has been grabbing people’s attention as you can see from messages like these:

“Please Please Please can you tell me the title of that lovely piece of music on your advert for Lights Out and Price Guarantee and my life will be complete.”Bill Batchelor from Poole in Dorset

“Please can you tell me the name of the music that is playing in the new advert?”Emma Dainty from Worcester

“Does anyone know what the music is on the @asda advert?”@amysmallperson on Twitter

We’ve also received lots of calls into customer services asking what it is and where you can buy a copy.

We can reveal the music is … the Humming Chorus from Madam Butterfly by Puccini – which might explain why so many people are humming it!

There are a number of versions of Madam Butterfly available on CD from Asda Entertainment. You’ll also find the Humming Chorus on a collection called Opera Classics – 50 great operatic tracks by various composers that costs just £6.93, a saving of £2.56, and with free delivery.

Morrisons miss the point on the Asda Price Guarantee

Oh dear, Morrisons are clearly a little rattled by our new Asda Price Guarantee – they’ve taken out adverts in national newspapers today showing a (very carefully!) selected basket of shopping that would cost £10.39 less in Morrisons compared with Asda.

They’re missing the point. This kind of ad is exactly why we introduced the Asda Price Guarantee.

Our new promise is simple – if you shop at Asda and find your basket would have been cheaper at Morrisons, Tesco or Sainsbury’s we’ll give you the difference back – plus a penny – when you next shop with us.

We can do it because we’re confident that in the vast majority of cases your weekly shop at Asda will be cheaper than at our main competitors.

We admire Morrisons hard work in creating a basket of shopping that is full of items on promotion to make the basket cheaper compared with Asda.

But we think this is exactly the kind of phoney price comparison we know irritates you – and that’s why we’ve launched the Asda Price Guarantee.

So if your shopping basket at Asda happened to match the items Morrisons have carefully chosen for their advert – containing things like Smirnoff Vodka, Phileas Fogg crisps and Carte d’Or ice-cream – our online price checker would indeed tell you the basket would be £10.39 cheaper at Morrisons. But now you don’t have to worry about that because we’d give you a voucher for £10.40 to use next time you shop with us.

It’s really straightforward. We’re confident your shopping will nearly always cost you less every week in Asda. But on the odd occasion it’s not we’ll give you the difference, plus a penny, to spend on your next Asda shop.

That’s not a gimmick. It’s a promise.

Asda Price Guarantee tried and tested by non-Asda shoppers

We asked three people who normally shop elsewhere to try out our new Asda Price Guarantee and report back. Here’s what they found:

Eileen Hughes Eileen Hughes, 41, usually shops at Tesco.

“I did a family shop at Asda on Sunday. I found all the products I usually buy – but to my surprise I found Asda to be much cheaper. I bought branded products and some Asda own brands which were particularly well-priced, for example two packets of wholewheat pasta for £1.00 – this is much cheaper than Tesco and I feel real value for money. There were also ‘buy one get one free’ offers which I do usually buy. I feel at the moment every pound counts for me and my family and so being able to compare prices is really useful. I have been so impressed with the price that I will shop at Asda again – as I did not have to compromise or choose anything I wouldn’t normally.”

Elaine saved £7.39 compared to Tesco, £8.97 compared to Sainsbury’s and £7.84 compared to Morrisons.

Holly Coviello Holly Coviello, 35, usually shops at Morrisons.

“All the leading supermarkets claim to be the cheapest so it will be interesting to see what this will bring in the future and I (personally) would take the time to compare. Shopping recently has become far less enjoyable and you seem to get so little for your money, it’s really nice to know that you can actually choose the cheapest supermarket and that it will really make a difference to your bill. My shop on Sunday was a general one … some essentials and a few treats for the children. There were lots of generally good offers which is always good to see. I would definitely make the effort to shop at Asda from now on. Knowing that you will be saving money when you are shopping for a family of five is really good to hear.”

Holly saved £5.83 compared to Tesco, £9.27 compared to Sainsbury and £3.56 compared to Morrisons

Karen Homer, 38, usually shops at Sainsbury’s.

Karen Homer “My husband and I went with our 15-month-old daughter to Asda at the weekend. The store was fully stocked and it didn’t take us long to find what we needed and there were enough checkouts open to use without waiting, so our daughter didn’t get too frustrated. But the best part was getting a call to tell us what savings we had made compared to Sainsbury’s (which is our local shop) along with Tescos and Morrisons. We are converted to Asda now!!”

Karen saved £6.58 compared to Tesco, £6.21 compared to Sainsbury’s and £10.15 compared to Morrisons

Sarah Randall Sarah Randall, 34, normally shops at Tesco.

“I completed my shopping trip to Asda on Sunday 25th April. I found there was a lot of variety of products, both branded and own brand. The clothing section is very good as is all other non food products, very good variety. There were some good special offers; prices generally are very competitive across the departments. I felt that I got good value for money and if anything had more shopping for my budget. The new Asda Price Guarantee is great. This will encourage me to make extra journey to Asda, as price is very important to me with a young family to look after.”

Sarah saved £4.86 compared to Tesco, £9.91 compared to Sainsbury’s and £4.22 compared to Morrisons

"It's the start of a fantastic new chapter in the Asda Price story"

Our chief exec Andy Bond says the Asda Price Guarantee is a “watershed moment in the history of Asda Price” – so we asked Mike Killoran, a colleague who first joined Asda more than 40 years ago, to reflect on that history.

Mike is a former store manager and head of customer services, and his role now involves teaching colleagues the “Asda way” to do things. He fondly remembers the launch of Asda Price and the Pocket Tap adverts from the late 1970s starring the likes of Leonard Rossiter, Hattie Jaques and Julie Walters.

Asda Price Guarantee As you’ll see in the video Mike is in no doubt about the significance of the Asda Price Guarantee, and excited to be in at the start of what he calls a “fantastic” new chapter in the Asda Price story.
