More exciting sporting news from our Asda Athletes

Every single Asda store and depot in the country has adopted a talented young athlete to support throughout 2010 – and all of them are sharing their progress and their news through personal blogs on the Asda Athletes website.

Some of the latest news from our athletes:

  • Rower Caspar Jopling and his partner Ed have been in Singapore participating in the first ever Youth Olympic Games! They came in second at the semi-finals and finished in an admirable fourth place in the final. Read the article in The Guardian about their achievements here.

  • Another of our athletes, Freya Jones, is also at the Youth Olympic Games. She has qualified for the javelin final, which will be held on Saturday 21 August. We wish her the best of luck!

  • Equestrian vaulter Paige Brown has won the title of under-14 English Champion for the third year running, after winning the 2010 English Championships with a final score of 6.9. What a fantastic achievement.

These young athletes get more than financial support as part of the scheme – their local Asda store works with them to raise their profile locally and find additional ways to raise funds to help them with the high expense of achieving their sporting dreams.

In the past few weeks, alpine skier Kate Angus and swimmer Cameron Smith have both been into their local stores to help with bag packing. Volleyball player Tyler Everitt even helped out with Asda Totton’s fun day, setting up a court where children and adults alike could come to learn about the sport or challenge his team to a game.

All the athletes have also been attending sessions around the country to receive a cheque for £500, meet the Asda Athletes and SportsAid teams, hear from sporting celebrities, and get tips and advice on how to work with the media to make the most out of opportunities and raise their profile in the community.
