I wanted to share with you a great new product that ASDA are trialling – bambino lettuce.
Bambino lettuce

The varieties are small versions of lettuce heads that you would normally see in prepared salad bags, such as red battavia, green lollo biondo and oakleaves, sold in a 3 pack to give a great mixed salad.

Unfortunately this is only a small trial into a handful of stores but if successful will be hitting a store near you next summer.

First off…did you know we grow Pak Choi in the UK?

Well yes we do, it’s massive growth over recent years points to our increasingly adventurous palettes but it needs a bit of extra looking after to keep the bugs off. Here you can see a completely natural way to do just that – the Enviromesh!

We source a lot of our beans from Worcestershire. Stephen, our Vegetable Technical Manager, visited to check out the UK crop and assess the quality before we put it on our shelves.

There’s real care goes into this from the pickers in the field to the quality manager on site. It’s also fascinating to learn why the early crop bends and the introduction of 7 bee hives across their 17 acres to give nature a helping hand with the pollination – just don’t get too close as our farmer did here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We all know that herbs can make or break a dish… and fresh herbs knock the spots off dried herbs for the vast majority of dishes you cook. The British climate allows us to grow herbs during certain months, and when that is the case it will always be British first.

A team of us went to see Joe Cottingham, our grower, to see what work he has been doing to extend the length of the British growing season and the new types of herbs he’s been developing for us, including the very cute baby aubergine!

We are in the middle of British Summer – I’m sure you’ll agree that strawberries are our most iconic fruit for this time of year. Last week Artur Grochala (Technical Manager on Berries) and Steven Fletcher (QA Inspector in Asda Wakefield Depot) visited one of our main strawberry growers – John Busby who is based in Stafford.

John has been growing strawberries since 1976 and this year we are expecting over 1000 tonnes from his farm which equals to over 2.5 million punnets of strawberries! During the season we visit our growers to ensure the best and consistent quality fruit is available to Asda customers – watch this space for more videos.

delicious British apples
It was a day like any other day in the fruit and veg team until… We took delivery of the first British apple of the season! This precious first sample batch (‘Discovery’ is the variety by the way) were pounced upon as Artur proudly paraded them sent fresh from Kent this morning!

But before they all went I took this picture to show you. We know the quality is great as we’ve been assessing the crop all year, but once we’ve double checked they will start to be delivered to depots over the weekend and in store for you next week.
