It’s probably much too late to say Happy New Year (oh and I have also missed Valentines Day)… anyway I am back now and I thought I would kick of 2011 blogging with some pancake fun… It’s Shrove Tuesday on Tuesday 8th March.
First a short history lesson… The word shrove is linked to the English verb to shrive, which means to obtain absolution for ones sins by way of confession and doing penance. Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday and noted in histories dating back to 1000 AD. In the UK and many other countries, the day is often known as Pancake Day. Making and eating such foods was considered a last feast with ingredients such as sugar, fat and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.
