Why are some of Asda's apples and pears grown in South Africa?

Seems a little odd to be bringing apples, pears and other top fruit from South Africa but the country has several advantages. The different season helps with maintaining supplies all year round. The transport distance isn’t that great as the fruit is shipped. Crucially, as these fruit are at the behest of the weather, it helps to have several sources to maintain quality, variety and supply.

Asda has a dedicated team in South Africa who work directly with the industry and individual growers. We are known for this in the UK and have similar programmes in South Africa. The head of our team, Mike Newton explains the work we do.
