It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas – and now it’s for real. Today is the day to decorate the Christmas Tree; we’ve waited until my daughter comes home from her first term at University and then we can do it as a family. I hope we don’t fall out about where the skiing penguin goes, and who didn’t check the lights were working and whether it’s the turn of the star or the angel this year – it’s all good, family fun!

So to keep me smiling, here are three shiny, starry whites to tickle the taste buds before we sit down to a reunion meal.

Wines for our family reunion

Villa Maria Sauvignon Blanc £7.98
Fresh as a daisy, whistle clean and deliciously crisp – classic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Great with fishy starters.

Vale da Capucha Fossil £8.50
I am very proud of this Portuguese wine. It’s the Atlantic sea in a glass – bright and breezy and dry but with a gorgeous richness to it. Brilliant. Stun and amaze your friends. Choose something a little bit different this Christmas.

Tenuta Roveglia Lugana £7.00
This is a calm and soothing glass. A touch of sweetness softens the crisp acidity making it the perfect Italian wine to settle down with once the trauma of the tree is over.

Here’s to home at last!

Hooray! Once we start talking about sparklers we’re really getting into the festive spirit because doesn’t everyone love to celebrate with a glass of fizz? I know I do. So here are a few suggestions at different prices to suit your pocket and your palate. I know, the lists get longer but how can I choose between all my many favourites?

Festive fizz

Indulgent Champagne: Piper Heidseick Champagne Brut
One of my very favourite Champagnes – I love the lightness and freshness of this style and a glass of this shared with family (along with a few nibbles or salted almonds) makes the best possible aperitif. Delicious!

Tasty Treat: Extra Special Louis Bernard 1er Cru Champagne
So good, so very, very good, it won Gold! Oh, and two Trophies and a Good Housekeeping Best Buy. The creamy quality of this Extra Special Premier Cru shines out of the glass. This is most definitely my Christmas morning Champagne. And Boxing Day… and probably New Year’s Eve as well. Lovely, lovely, lovely!

Friends’ Favourite (Part One): Villa Yolanda Prosecco
I do like a drop of Prosecco and I don’t think I’m alone. Incredibly popular, probably because it’s smoother and less acidic than Champagne and such good value, Prosecco is taking Britain by storm. From our range I’ve picked this smart and seductive bottle (and the fizz is proper tasty, too).

Friends’ Favourite (Part Two): Extra Special Mas Miralda Vintage Cava Brut
Have you been caught up in the tapas frenzy yet? Tapas bars seem to be taking over the world (there’s a great one five minutes walk from our house and we just love all the tasty stuff on offer). So, because I don’t want any of us to miss a new trend, how about a glass of Cava with your tapas? Or with anything, of course. This Extra Special has Reserva wine in the blend which gives it a creamier, smoother flavour. Great for parties.

I know I said on Monday that I would recommend a bottle per day but sorry, there are just so many good things in the Asda Wine Shop that I can’t be expected to stop at one wine, can I – and you’ll be buying gifts for more than one person, won’t you? So here are three wines that would wow friends, family or colleagues when unwrapped on Christmas Morning.

Christmas red wines

Proper Indulgence: Chateau de Lussac Bordeaux 2009 £12.50
A Bordeaux red for that very special someone and at an unbelievably good price. A classic red blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot with richly berried fruit matched to a proper spicy, leafy flavour. And ever since I visited this beautiful Chateau in the summer, I have been in love with this wine.

Special Treat: Chateau Bois Chantant Bordeaux £8.98
A traditional Christmas theme in fashion this year – lots of Nordic decorations, red and green; so wrap up this classic wine for well under a tenner that’s deliciously fruity but a great match to Sunday roasts (or even Christmas lunch – would be awesome with beef or turkey).

Friends’ Favourite: Celliers des Dauphins Cotes de Vinsobres £6
Wow! This is good – packed with spicy, brambly flavours, incredibly smooth and chocolatey – this would make a stunning present when popping round to the neighbours – and fingers crossed they open it there and then. Brilliant with red meats, casseroles and huge hunks of cheese.

It’s day two of our twelve wines of Christmas and we’ve got a gorgeous Sauvignon Blanc on the menu that’s a fab gift idea – read on to find out why Philippa recommends it and don’t forget to check back for a new wine every day up until Christmas Eve!

Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2013

Spoil someone special with a bottle of Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2013, the iconic Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc that made the wine world sit up and take New Zealand seriously. Green, fresh and layered with lovely passion fruit flavours. This is the white which will make any wine lover’s eyes light up as brightly as a Christmas tree! And if you’re like me you’ll sneak another bottle into your order because you never give a present that you wouldn’t want to receive yourself.
