Asda Active

We hope you and your kids can join us for this year’s Asda Active Summer Sports Days at a school near you. We are building on our 2012 Summer of Sport by joining forces with Sports Leaders UK to deliver 400 Sports Days at primary schools across the UK.

Last year we built the Asda Active panel to help us focus on the issues important to you. The health and prospects of your kids was at the top of that list and we have developed a new charity partnership that will address them head on – Asda Active Sports Leaders.

Sports Leaders UK changes lives: its range of awards and qualifications equips people with the skills and motivation to create and run sporting activities in the community. Asda’s investment will help grow the number of young people they impact. We hope to reach 500,000 young people in the UK over the next three year. It has the potential to transform the lives of millions of young people in the UK.

There’s has been a spell of great early September weather to cap off a brilliant summer of sport which of course means that Asda Active is also packing away its stumps and nets for the year.

There were 22 events up and down the country and youngsters were treated to 17 different sports to have a go at. From Zumba to fencing and football to boxing…there was something for everyone and hopefully it will have got the younger generation into a new sport.

When Asda Active started back in May, the idea was to provide facilities and opportunity to get involved in sport and certainly the Asda mums liked what they saw.

Jackie Boyton said “Everyone was so welcoming and it’s local… it’s been brilliant.” See the video of what the Asda Mums said about Asda Active click here

Asda Active is nearing the end of its summer run and so far we’ve been at Sandbach, Greenhithe, Northampton, Blackpool, Fareham, Queensferry, Southgate, Charlton, Brighouse, Edinburgh, St. Helens, Nottingham, Weymouth, Great Yarmouth, Gloucester, Newcastle, Sheffield, York, Telford, Belfast and Newport

Over the summer we joined forces with the national charity Fields in Trust to help protect local parks and playing fields from development to ensure they’ll be there for future generations to enjoy.

FIT logoIt’s part of an initiative to mark the year of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee by safeguarding 2012 outdoor recreational spaces.

We staged most of our Asda Active fun sports events on these Queen Elizabeth II Fields sites, and recorded all the plaque handing over ceremonies that occurred to mark the sites now firmly protected.

One such event took place at Wellholme Park, Brighouse on Saturday 30th June, 2012 featuring Field In Trust’s Deputy Chief Executive, Don Earley, who presented a lovely plaque the size of a bin lid to councillor Christine Beale. You can see the ceremony video here.

You can also check to see if there’s a protected park near you by entering your postcode at the charity’s Queen Elizabeth II Fields Challenge website.
