Congratulations to our fab Weymouth Community Champion Sandy West who has become Mayor of the Island and Royal Manor of Portland!

Sandy was named Mayor at a grand ‘mayor making’ ceremony with more than 60 invited guests including World Champion Paralympic sailor Megan Pascoe and the High Sheriff of Dorset Sir Philip Williams.

She was interviewed by local papers and radio stations, spoke about her Asda role and how she hopes to combine both roles for the good of the community.

Two students from a special school in Leicester have gained confidence about working life after completing a period of work experience at our Thurmaston store.

Daniel, Jordan and Melissa

Eighteen year olds Daniel and Jordan from West Gate Special School visited the store each Friday for the last five weeks, completing a variety of tasks in the store.

Elaine Braden, who is an employment officer at the school, said: “The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it gave them confidence. They got a great insight in to life in the adult world and were given name badges, uniform and their own locker.”

When Nick Brooker’s motorised wheelchair broke down he was stuck on a busy road half a mile from his home in Eastbourne… until our delivery driver Laurence Williams spotted him and pulled over.

Nick, who has trouble speaking, showed him a card with his name and address – and Laurence pushed him back to Chaseley Trust Home, which cares for people with acquired brain injuries.

Ana Kirk, team leader in direct care at Chaseley Trust, said: “It was a very beautiful thing that Laurence did. It was quite a distance to push him back. These motorised wheelchairs are very heavy for one person to push, particularly as part of the journey was uphill.”

We’re so proud of our amazing colleague Adam Brook, who’s recovering after donating a kidney to save the life of one of his best friends.

Adam, a home shopping driver at our Middlesbrough store, turned out to be a perfect match for his teenage friend Lewis Linton who desperately needed a kidney donor.

So last month they had surgery on the same day at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle, with Lewis receiving Adam’s healthy kidney.
