Our new Stilton - designed by Wendy, one of our customers

Summer Stilton designed by Wendy Day When we asked customers to design a new cheese for Asda we got so many great ideas that we’ve decided to put not one but three of them on our shelves.

Summer Stilton – the first to go on sale – was designed by Wendy Day from Bristol who suggested combining white Stilton with white chocolate, orange, peach and vanilla pod.

Wendy says: “I like white chocolate and fruit, particularly peaches. I got the idea of adding fruit after seeing a white stilton and cranberry cheese. And I added a vanilla pod because Green and Black do a white chocolate with vanilla which is really nice.”

Wendy, who is a volunteer for several charities, says she has never created her own recipe before and doesn’t normally do any baking, but was inspired to enter our competition and simply “visualised” the ingredients together.

Her Summer Stilton will be entered into the Nantwich Cheese Show Awards which are taking place at the end of this month. Two other cheeses suggested by our customers will also go on sale later in the year – Wensleydale with rhubarb and ginger crumble and Cheddar with sun-dried tomato, smoked garlic and basil.

The competition was the idea of Dawn Clements from our dairy team who helped judge the entries along with her team and guest judge Sean Wilson from Masterchef.

They initially chose a shortlist of 10 which they “made” in the food innovation kitchen at Asda House by mixing grated cheese with the suggested ingredients. They then chose the final six to be made into full cheeses for tasting.

Eddie the cheesemakerThe overall winner was Wendy’s Summer Stilton which went into production at cheesemakers Shirevale. That’s Eddie from Shirevale pictured left.

We think the cheese is perfect for summer but don’t take our word for it – try it and let us know what you think.
