Tell Asda till receipts gather views from 250,000 customers

More than 250,000 Asda customers have provided us with feedback on their shopping experiences through our Tell Asda survey launched at the start of 2009.

Check your receipt next time you’re at the tills – you may be one of the customers asked in a message on the receipt to tell us all about your experience in the store. Customers are directed to a website or a freephone number where they can leave their feedback.

It’s just one of the many ways we listen to what our customers are saying – and it’s a particularly good way of capturing the instant reaction of a broad cross-section of shoppers across every one of our stores and spotting things that store managers, regional managers and head office teams need to know about and act on.

The industry magazine Retail Week interviewed Asda customer insight manager Rebecca Briscoe about the Tell Asda survey this week. Read the article here.

Wendy Warner from Huntley, Gloucestershire says:

In answer to my recent till receipt worth £70.97p I would like to praise your staff for their help and understanding when I am looking for a certain item nothing is too much trouble for them they are always so friendly and helpful. I have never yet failed to purchase what is on my shopping list and the choice of food stuffs is incredible. The aisles are nice and wide which is a great help when meeting other customers coming from the opposite direction. Thankyou again Asda for a better class supermarket which I proudly recommend to my friends

Just one point I would like to make , living in the country we buy long life milk semi and skimmed milk but I.m afraid we have to purchase it from else where because your cartons don,t have the screw top lids, just an idea in our favour.

Thankyou Wendy Warner

Liz Sorohan from Longford, Ireland says:

this was my second visit to asda in the last few months and i could not belive how help full and friendly the staff were dispite all the people that they had to deal with. Here in longford you are lucky to get an hello and they might only have one customer every few minutes and not a big crowd like your staff have to deal with. I wll be back.

Please bring back the 1 basket till. I don’t like the self service – always seems to be problems in that area. Look at the queues and there are many people with a basket only.

joy cook from st helens says:

As a cancer patient on a specialist vegan diet, I really appreciate your Free From … (wheat or milk or whatever is needed} section. Really helpful service and lovely staff. Only problem is ‘when are you going to start selling dairy free cheese? I have to go to Tesco’s in Prescot for this.

My daughter and I wanted organic tomatoes and the only pack had a tomato in it which was mouldy. We pointed this out to an assistant and he not only went and sought out some organic tomatoes for us, he gave us them free of charge due to our inconvenience.

The previous week I had to go into the local Spar shop to their post office when an old lady in front of me politely pointed out that their tomatoes were mouldy …. it was embarrassing. The female assistant gave her a load of abuse.

Asda and George …. you are wonderful.

sheila clark from Leigh on sea Essex says:

I love Asda, especially the Woddham Ferrers store. I was there last week with my little grandson, I think he is in love with the Father Christmas by the entrance. The food is always so fresh and the staff so helpful. I used to drive to this store when it first opened from Billericay to do my shopping, so we have a rather long history. I also got some good deals on Christmas presents for my grandchildren, another Asda bonus. Asda is a great store and I support it through and through Happy Christmas to you all Sheila

Maureen Graham from Dundee says:

I just wanted to say how pleased I have been over the past two years with the excellent service at the photo department in the Mid Craigie store in Dundee. The staff, without fail, are very helpful when I am learning to use the modern equipment to order photos from the memory card on my digital camera. Sometimes I make an error but it never phases them! I must add that I think the photo reproduction is of good quality and a very reasonable price, especially if i order a very large number of copies. Thank you very much!

Anne Grover from Diss says:

I shopped in your Store in Ipswich today the young lady on the till was very helpful and friendly< she asked if I needed help with my packing and I replied that I liked to pack my own bags. Then she made a comment about packing the bags that she had had lots of experience. So I then relised that she herself was offering to help me. I had thought that she would have to get another member of staff to help so had always refused help. I told her that and she said there were not enough staff to do that which is fine but now I know that the cash desk operator will help I may take it up in the future, with two people packing as we go along it will be even more efficient. So thanks and keep up the good work.

Amanda from Glenrothes says:

Hi Just wanted to thank the staff at my Glenrothes branch, they are always helpful, especially George in the fruit and veg aisle! Always very helpful and has a lot of good advice on the products! And in regards to the omalley comments, if you could not scroll down to see some of the negative comments, then I suggest you go to your nearest asda to pick up a mouse that can scroll I am sure the staff can help you!! And it is very obvious why restricting carrier bags can help the environment, and the planet. As it makes you reuse the ones you have already taken, not rocket science my friend! Maybe use your free moaning/point scoring time to do a bit of research on the internet into these issues! Just a thought!

dorothy from beeston nottingham says:

our local Asda store 4975 at Long Eaton has just had a re fit and I must applaud you for making the store so much brighter and creating much wider aisles, which is great as this enables me to get around much easier being in a wheelchair, the only fault I find is that the Deli section is now much smaller, with less choice on the cooked meat section, apart from that, the store is a joy to shop in. and the staff are very well trained to be so friendly to the customers. well done its great to have so much choise and so many bargains too, which we all need at the moment,.thanks to all the teams responsible.

Hi’ I like shopping at “ASDA” great value so many bargans! u just can’t beat it. when i’m going up and down aisle so much to choose, it would be nice just to stop of for a cup of “T” and then when i get to the checkouts i’m a little frustrated they are to close to the “AISLE’S” and you can’t get by. but other than that u feel welcome.

Oct 29, 2009 at 03:48 PM
Deborah Phillips from Peterlee says:

I would like some feedback from my local Asda (Peterlee) and anyone on here. It is that I’ve noticed a big change in the recipe used for a lot of fresh bread products from Asda bakery. I can’t comment on other stores but I regularly buy Tiger bread, baguettes and buns and also Hedgehog bread. The Tiger bread has much less tiger oil flavouring and is much lighter in weight, it’s normally nice and soft and stodgy on the inside and hard and crisp on the outside. The hedgehog bread has also gone from being nice and ‘claggy’ and very filling to light and airy like Danish bread. It’s nowhere near as nice and nowhere near the value. Has Asda changed it’s recipes deliberately?

Mr. Francis Igoe from newark area says:

As i started to enter your Lincoln store yesterday 22nd Oct. i was prevented from entering because of a traffic accident. I was short of time and chose to go to the local Sainsburys.A store i found to be much more expensive than your store. However what i was extremely impresssed by was the extremely excellent range of gluten free foods which we have to purchase for a member of the family. As a regular & loyal shopper at your stores, i would appreciate your comments on this subject

Oct 23, 2009 at 04:04 PM
Mrs Rose Ann Philliben from Denny says:

Yesterday I visited the Asda store at Stenhousemuir. My husband took ill while we were there and the staff at Asda were very helpful both to my husband and myself – as we had our grandson with us who is 16 months old. I can’t thank them enough for their help in getting the ambulance etc and checking out my shopping. The store itself is well laid out and easy to get round.

Once again I can’t thank the staff enough for all their help. It was a case of low blood pressure that cause him to collapse so he recovered to get out of hospital that evening.

Stehan Miles from Cardiff says:

Simply, that Asda has the best petrol stations around. I use Pontprennau and Cardiff Bay to buy fuel and the forecourts are excellent. They are always clean and tidy and staff polite and cheerful. The same applies to the water and air supplies, the services all work and are clean. The price of fuel is high nationally but I find Asda is usually competitive. There is a marked decline in standards on the odd occasion when I have visited other suppliers. My thanks to the staff and managers there.

Oct 16, 2009 at 09:09 PM
Lynne Yeagers from Wisbech says:

Having visited the store at North End, Wisbech on several occasions recently I am frustrated by the in store positioning of the greetings cards, books & magazines. They are displayed in the store beyond the main checkouts and thus cause congestion for shoppers eager to pay and depart, and for those wishing to browse for the card to match the person /occasion or select reading materials.

In addition to the lack of comfort for all concerned, there is the issue of having to queue up for a second time to pay for selected items at the cigarette counter.

Having spoken to staff in the store about this matter we also considered the subject of Asda offering the opportunity for the ‘less than honest’ shopper to add their items to their trolleys and leave the store…This affects us all in the prices we are charged for our goods.

For all concerned I do hope that you will consider this layout and all the ramifications current siting.

With thanks and concern.

Mrs Janice Shepherd from Ayr Scotland says:

I was shopping today at your branch in Ayr. The lady on the till was brill. I had been up most of the night due to a really bad asthma attack but needeed to shop, when I got to the check out you till operator was concerened enough to offer me a chair, drink of water and even offered to get someone to help me load my bags in the car and make sure I got home safe by way of a member of staff calling me.

She went totally out of her way which I have never experianced before, hence to say I was a bit embarrised by all this attention. I did take up her offer of help with packing and to the car to load but that was all. This member of staff needs to be recognised. I do hope this finds the young lady in question, Thank you asda for training your staff to this ability and to the till lady a huge thanks, its a shame more people are not like this, I was made to feel at ease today which helped me a lot.

To Dom from Asda. Just as I thought you moderators control the message board ! Can I ask you Dom, do you really think that curtailing the amount of carrier bags given out to customers is going to save the planet ? I await your brainwashed nu labour carbon-con reply !!!!!

I travel from Selsey to Havant to take advantage of your store prices which includes the George clothing section. You may think this is excessive travel, some 16 miles but I recover the cost of this by taking advantage of your cheap petrol.

Hi omalley, if you scroll down this and many other posts on Your Asda, you’ll see that there are a mixture of comments both good and bad. It’s not in our interest to ignore criticism – it’s what helps us improve. Every message that’s posted here is read by our team and passed on to appropriate Asda colleagues where needed. Thanks for commenting.

Patricia Gray from Dunfermline says:

I love Asda for so many reasons and have been shopping at Asda Dunfermline for around 30 years. I don’t believe anyone could get better value anywhere. There is the smart price range through to the special ranges, therefore a taste for every budget.

Personally, I wish the store had nicer toilets and I wish they were kept cleaner than they are. I would aslo request that checkout operators did not lick their fingers to separate carrier bags. This practice really makes me feel sick and puts me in the really awkward postiion of whether to mention this at the time or hope to get an opportunity like this one :-) to address this dreadful habit.

Store nice and clean. Most of the staff are friendly. However, our store is let down by the surly, unsmiling, trolley collectors who are the first Asda staff we see. Not a good start to ones shopping experience. And not a good advertisement for the store.

Rebecca from Asda says:

Tony, thanks for commenting. I know we may not always appear to act immediately on every issue our customers raise, but please rest assured that all of the feedback provided to the TellAsda site is seen and read by the local store team. Each store manager gets a word-for-word report of all comments made about their store and they are then reviewed together with all the other sources of feedback that we manage. Opening up to comments on Your Asda is another way we’re trying to make sure that the voice of our customers can be heard. We’ll continue to try to act on what you’re telling us and I can promise that we’re genuinely listening and taking action where we can. Best wishes.

Oct 09, 2009 at 12:59 PM
Tony Glazier from London says:

I have repeatedly “told ASDA” about serious deficiencies at one of their stores in NW London.

My comments have been ignored and most of the problems remain. They dont have a complaints procedure and effectively have no way for customers to make complaints. Clearly the replies to the surveys are not read or acted on.

I thought I had a way to make my concerns known when I saw the ASDA service managers name on a social networking site but I still could not contact him because I was not his “friend”.

Those postings below seem to have been selected as ones which praise ASDA stores. I think the store could be much better run. Should the staff be allowed to park all their shift close to the store entrance for example?

A week ago the checkout I was using had no plastic bags and said they could not get any even though the other ones all had them!

Helen Stonadge from Southampton says:

I use my ASDA at Chandlers Ford regularly even though I have 2 other major supermarkets within a mile of where I live – l especially love the clothing range & buy the majority of my clothing from GEORGE & the household sections have lovely items at such reasonable & affordable prices, the big plus is the ASDA foods & the prices are so within budget for all families. Fresh produce always the best quality. I find that my weekly shopping bill at ASDA is far cheaper than at any other supermarket – but without the compromise on quality, freshness & availability. I always find the staff to be helpful & friendly.

As always the service good, however, today was EXCEPTIONALLY good! I needed advice on a particular item and the young lady who served me went beyond the high standard one has come to expect at ASDA, being 79 years of age, I find the assistance and patience extended to be tremendously helpful.

Paul Pollington from Milton Keynes Asda / George superstore. says:

I have found lately that a few of the till staff are getting to be miserable, not sure why, i asked one lady how’s things with you, and she said can’t wait to go home, in fact the last 6 in a row have said basically the same thing to me, and one annoyed me to the point, that i said, be thankful you have a job as i have been unemployed since May ‘09 I myself have been trying to get a application form to join Asda, but everytime i ask at the Help desk, sorry sir, there are no form’s or vacancies available. But on a good note, i would like to praise the staff in your Cafe in this branch, especially two of the ladies who serve me every week, very friendly & even ask me how my job searching is getting on, so could you tell them from me, how wonderful they all are, and to keep up the good work. Also the Sound & Vision staff who are always friendly to me when i go and chat to them about the products, they deserve a thank you as well.

Whilst on holiday in Scotland we called into ASDA in Ardrossan where we ate in the cafe and did some shopping. I don’t think that we have been in any supermarket where all of the staff were so very friendly and helpful. They all deserve recognition for service beyond the norm.

Why when we come into the store on a morning came we not get around the aisles because of order pickers . They block the ailses and we have to move the trollies to get passed. As the store opens 24 hours could the orders not be picked during the night .

lana forrester from birmingham says:

I recently visited the Bromsgrove store as it the nearest asda to me. I had my 13 week old baby with me who was crying. one member of staff came up to me and asked me if I needed any assistance as they could see I had my hands full. Not only did she help me to the till with my trolley but she organised for someone to pack my shopping, she then arranged for a gentleman to come and take my trolley to the car. I was so impresssed with the service that I will swap my shopping to asda now as I have never received service like this from the other main supermarkets. My only issue is that I didnt get the staff names so that they could be thanked.

Till receipt number 4949 We Have been shopping at the Wolverhampton store since it opened, we basically find everything that we need within the store, the main problem with the Wolverhampton store is that, it simply struggles to cope with th evolume of shoppers, I feel when it was built it was probably expected to take around £750k per week I would estimate it now takes over £2m per week. To have only one store in a city a large as Wolves doesn’t make sense, as you are aware there is planning permission granted to build a new supermarket (Tesco) near wolves market and a new Sainsbury’s being built in Wombourne( where we live) opening spring 2010 both options are going to be attractive to us as we live that side of Wolves, also I would presume would both be selling fuel, which you got rid of to provide more car parking space. It would seem to make sense to sell the land back to Wolverhamton Wanderers Fc and build a new one on the site of Goodyears which would be big enough to site a full size Wallmart, with a smaller store situated on th eother side of Wolves.

Always use the local asda as its convenient and I know the exact location of the majority of goods I may wish to purchase at a dash, staff always pleasant with many tills in operation keeping waiting to a minimum. Just wish suppliers would reduce the the vast amount of needless packaging which we have to pay for and dispose of,especially on fruit and veg.

Why can’t I buy WHITEJERSEY or WOVENBOXER SHORTS in any ASDA Store? I do not like any self-coloured or patterned Boxer Shorts - I think they are NAFF - I cannot find any plain white Boxer Shorts - WHY?

Hi, why is it your green / eco freindly washing freshener contains palm tree derivatives. this is neither green or eco freindly as the destruction of palm trees are leaving thousands of urang a tangs homeless every year .

i always look to see if palm is used in things i buy and don’t if they do.. i think this is just as important as hydrogenated fats as one is bad for oour health and the other is bad for our world

Gail Langman from Sale says:

Extremely efficient and helpful staff, well managed and laid out store BUT the music!! Much too loud. Whilst speaking to a customer service member of staff speaker was overhead which made it difficult to hear what was being said and on shopping in store the loud music spoiled what would otherwise have been a good shopping experience. Please turn down the volume or I will have to shop elsewhere.

Ms A JONES from Weymouth, Dorset. says:

I visited my local store 4924 and was surprised how much the selection of products have improved. I usually shop at Morrison due to proximatey to my home address but decided to have a change. Goods were well displayed and a better choice then my usual store. The checkout was faster with more operatives and the lady that served me Maria was very polite and helpful which makes a big change having someone happy with a smile serve you. What i did and still find poor is the most ridiculious traffic system in the parking area, absolute chaos and certainly in my eyes needs re designing as traffic simply does not flow and you have to keep going back on yourself to get in and out. This is the only thing that needs improving and would stop me shopping there if i saw it was busy in the car park.

It would be really handy if there was an e-mail address for people to use when they have ordered shopping online rather than paying 5ppm each time there is a problem with a home delivery. Looking forward to hearing your comments on this matter. Naomi

My family are delighted with our ASDA store in Chelmsley Wood,we have waited many years for a decent supermarket, but now that it is here it is Magic, all we need now is a Petrol Station run by ASDA of course.

P Doughty from Harlow, Essex says:

I could not believe ASDA do not stock or sell freezer bags! When our current ones have worn out through constant use what do you think we do? We struggle on buses that are unreliable adding to journey times and defrosting of food in ordinary bags. What if we do not want to go directly home? May I suggest you re-consider your position, or my freezer shopping will eventually end up elsewhere.

Gillian from Hamilton says:

I regularly shop on line at ASDA for groceries. I was delighted when I logged on yesterday to see that there was a slot between 8 and 10pm, when delivery was free.

However, my delivery arrived at 11.45 pm. I must stress that this is NOT a complaint about the customer service, who called to advise of the delay, or the delivery driver who arrived with my shopping, both of whom were extermely courteous and apologetic. What concerns me is that ASDA is clearly seeking to achieve competivie advantage by offering late delivery slots, sometimes at low or no cost, without investing the resources to ensure that this happens efficiently. I should point out that although this is my most recent experience it is not an isolated incident. In recent months the delivery time has become less reliable, with more deliveries arriving late than within the specified time frame. In past years late delivery resulted in the delivery charge being waived. However, this appears no longer to be the case. In business terms this initiative is flawed. From a cusatomer point of view it is unlikely that there will be repeat business if the service proves to be unreliable and from a human resource angle it is unlikely that staff will remain with a company that places unrealisic demands on their staff. My main concern is not for the business interests of ASDA but for the safety and well being of staff who are working unitl midnight, in the rain and having to respond to many disgruntled customers, when they have little or no control over the situation they find themselves in. If ASDA is an company that listens to the views of customers, I would ask that meeting the demands of customers is not achieved at the expense of reasonable and ethical employment practices. I would welcome your comments on the points I have raised

Kathy Wolff from Ballyclare says:

Tried to get on “tell asda” but couldn’t, a person wrote try Tesco, might have been right. Went to local store and enquired about the bread section stopping a certain type of bread that I liked, I am still waiting on a reply to my request.

Staff at Ballyclare store are great but when Asda decide to change things it would be helpful if staff in that section knew why.

Sue Rogers from cwmbran says:

i am a regular shopper online spending an average of £135.00 a WEEK..

I do not go into store, infact since shopping with you online, I have not gone into town for months.

I am so saddened that by shopping with you online i an missing out on In Store offers.

I have been looking for 2 stair gates but refuse to pay the prices they are at the moment but when surfing the net found that ASDA had stair gates @ £7.50 each I was estatic and called youer store immediately.

Can you imagine the huge disapointment I felt when told I had missed the offer by 1 DAY…. and unable to buy them at that price now….

Do you not think it unfair that by capturing customers online we miss out on special offers where you should be thanking us for using and paying extra for this service.

Could in store offers not be put online for us as a ‘pop up’ so we can choose whether to visit ASDA to buy these offers,.

I feel very let down as I thought ALL stores and online are the same and online shoppers would not miss out…

This has really put me off online shopping with you in the future as I seem to miss out on vital items at a reduced price…

thank you

Mrs.Tina Johnson from scunthorpe says:

It is about time ASDA reopened a snack bar at Scunthorpe, not a cafe but somewhere to have a cup of tea or coffee, and serving cakes, buns, pies, sandwiches made in store therefore eliminating need for cooking within the snack bar. You have the room already at this store.

Mr J.M. Dobson from York says:

I have literally sent dozens of replies from my shopping receipts with no comment from yourselves but now I cannot even enter the site for to-days receipts. Is this competition now closed? If so why are the receipts still advertising a prize draw. Looking at the many other people who have been upset by this site it would appear that the general consensus is shop elsewhere.

Mrs Miller from Lincoln says:

I moved into the area in May this year but before I moved I used to always shop in Waitrose as the shop is spacious, well stocked and they always have really good deals on. Shopping became even more attractive when they offered either a free delivery to your door, or pick up from store service – I never shopped anywhere else!!

Now I am here I have shopped in Asda along with some of the other stores on Tritton Road but I have definitly done my weekly shop with you on the occassions where you have offered my free delivery – so do yourselves a favour and dump the delivery charges as Waitrose have and I am sure that you will find yourselves unindated with new customers!!!

Hi Margaret, sorry to hear you had trouble with the Tell Asda form. The problem could have been any one of a number of things from the site itself to the Internet connection. We do however value any and all feedback, so perhaps you’d be prepared to give it another go next time? Best wishes.

As a regular shopper at Asda in Gosforth I was delighted to have the opportunity to fill in your till-receipt survey today. However, having got to the section where the questions relate to items I would like to see in stock the page just disappeared, and I have not been able to retrieve it, which means I have completely wasted the last half-hour filling in the first part of the survey Can you tell me why this should have happened please?
