We’re big fans of bright ideas.
Especially bright ideas that save us money we can pass onto our customers with lower prices. That’s how we save them money on their weekly shop.
So we’re planning to launch a new scheme called ‘Bright Ideas’ that will reward customers who come up with the best way of saving us money. Not with a gift voucher or a free basket of shopping, but with hard cash. If your suggestion is put into practice you could get up to 5% of the saving so if your idea saves us £2 million, you could get a cheque for £100,000.
Not bad for just an idea.
So get your thinking cap on and watch this space for more details of the ‘Bright Ideas’ scheme when it launches next year.

Dear Sir /Madam, This is less about saving Kesselmanand more about making you £2 million more.
I have been meaning to write to you for some while, but have never somehow found the time. As I am now off work with a broken leg, I have time and would like to help you increase your instore sales.
I and others to whom I have spoken, now often heitate before going in to your stores and when we do can not stay in them for long. Now I realise you are trying to attract the young customers with your music choice. But why drive out anyone above about 18? I have just finished medical school as a mature student and was happy to sit in the bar at univeristy with the latest loud, jarring music and even enjoyed it. But trying to concentrate on browsing, chosing and buying goods with that type of music is quite challenging. It is not relaxing and can really make one agitated. Music is very nice in a store…but to keep us in there why not something that doesnt irritiate and jar. I am sure you could appeal to all ages by something like the 60’s type of music. It seems to be msuic which is enjoyed and appreciated by all age groups. Or perhaps the type of music that is played on Magic radio?
When you running an advertising campaign…you could even induce customers by telling them that the ear and head bashing music has stopped for awhile and been replaced with soemthing lovely, soothing etc. Perhaps ask for feedback and see if customers are happier .
Bet lots of people will come and see what that is all about. If this works…might have some more good ideas for you. Yours faithfully Yvette Kesselman.
I would like to purchase online, from the US for my UK relations, gifts and photos but can’t without a UK registered credit card. Is there ever going to be a way to do this? Seems like this could be organized via Walmart, and gain sales from US customers wanting to save postage, and look after relatives.
A friend of mine shared a story with me and I thought it might be something you would like to consider using for your future christmas commercials. Its regarding her three year old niece. Apparently, her niece’s family only shop at Asda. Last christmas her niece opened her presents and found to her delight, an item that she had admired and wanted at the Asda store. Her face lit up with joy as she exclaimed “wow, Santa shops at Asda too!” Aww bless her.
They apparently have this recorded on video.
for the attention of the Sales manager/Managing Director,
Dear Sirs, Having heard, on the radio this morning, that you are apparently having difficulties with your advertising slogans. I offer the following:
(1) Letting you pocket the difference (2) Asda lets you pocket the difference (3) Asda’s aim is your pockets gain
These are just a few I’ve come up with ina matter of minutes They are for sale at £2,000 each and I shall be watching to see if you use them Yours sincerely
Mike Cockett
Having used you self service checkout a number of times I can’t help wondering if you could program the till software to accept that if a customer has already had their age verified for the purchase of alcohol for example , then this wouldnt be necessary for verifying age against DVD’s for the same basket.
Hi asda, I have a fab idea that would attract large number of customers and obviously generate massive sales. Now that people with different ethinic backgrounds are keen to try out and enjoy more of asian cusine, so why not give the customers option to taste freshly cooked home made asian food (biryani, curries, pakoras etc..) at your hot food counter/ restaurants at a competitive prices compared to that in the market. I have tried out this idea at many places and it has worked successfully. Please let me know whom can I get in touch with reagrds to above reference. I will await your positive response.
The is a profit boosting idea rather than money saving. I would like to see you improve you childrens clothing range to include elastic pull-in button waist on trousers and skirts. I currently cannot buy your childs clothing as I cannot alter the waist as my children grow. Your competitors Tesco and Next have elastic button waist and this means the clothes stay up. There must be many parents who avoid buying clothing from yourself which is a great same as I like your range but they just fall off of my children thus I avoid making a purchase and have to resort to your competitors. Please can you consider this as an idea. I am sure that your clothing sales would increase.
I would like to compliment ASDA, as they are a brilliant store. Yes there are many of things and ideas that you could work on. every post on above is wonderfull, I wouldnt be able to think of all them in one go.
I think that you need to focus on Three things:.
Making customers happy – and to never forget what a wonderfull experience ASDA was
Doing what is right for the customer – taking care of dated items and fragile items
Taking care of your customers – Assist us while we shop, have colleagues help the elderley, take care of children while we shop, give free samples of new food regular basis..etc
Every thing that you do, you always do right and this is brilliant. But please bear in mind the above, maybe this will help you pick the best ide ( even though they are all good).
Hi, I have recently shopped at the Park Royal and Doncaster store. From what I have seen, it can be a night mare shopping with kids under the age of 12.Dont get me wrong…I love my children and all, but shopping and giving attention to your kids and still having to rush is not fun. But we all have to shop!!Why not have a little kids corner with older mature kids or parents that can look after the children while us parents shop in peace and even better.
This wont cost you allot, all you need to do is budget wisely and allow the ASDA colleagues to take turns in painting the kids faces, blowing ballons and letting them draw in pictures to keep them entertained while we shop. There are lots of young kids who have finished school who wouldnt mind baby sitting. This is one investment that you will never regret in making. There are many guidelines I can give you in order for you to make this successfull, example: let every mom keep their kids in the play corner only every 45 min so that the child care taker can focus on all the kids in the corner. Simple things like these can make our lives shopping at ASDA so much more fun and easier. After all, you do want a happy ASDA customer leaving the store, right?
On the other note, I do agree with many of the other posts above, you should start rapping fragile items like eggs and wine in bubble wrap, it might take a little longer at the check out point, but think about it, youll give out less refunds for broken stock.
Good luck!!!!!!
Have Santa grottos in store, charge £3 get a toy. Kids happy Asda happy. Have Santa in a green costume at the back, traditional red at the front. Santa@SASDA.
ASDA CARBOX
One of the key problems is bagging at the checkout We often forget to bring a recycled bag and end up using plastic bags Based on garage storage units The Asda Carbox would retail @ ? and be designed to stack in the Asda trolly and fit the boot of most cars. Many boxes would be left in the car and transfered from the car to a shopcart in the carpark negating the need for bags of any type.
This not a prize winning comment and so obvious to saving money it hurts to witness this going on week after week after week!!!
Every time I shop in ASDA I am shocked to see how many lines are not stock rotated, the newest best before dates to the front and the old and rapidly achiving expired best before dates at the back.
If I can see this, what does it take to be a manager at your stores – your losses must be incredible concerning expired perishables.
I would forget looking for swanky witty and articulate ways and means of saving money and begin at the basics again!!!
Good luck.
Checkout people do not have info about the product price and often resort to sending someone to find out the exact price, which is total waste of time. Asda need a computer system which have all the product info.
Its not easy to find products, which is waste of time. Asda can resolve this by installing small computer screen at different places which will give all the product info ie, location, stock level and price.
So far i have not seen such computer screen in tesco or any stores. Asda would be the first one to introduce.
I have a sales idea which i feel will generate Asda millions of pounds worth of business who do i need to contact to discuss this
A money saving idea, why dont you put everything that comes in tins or jars into a bag, design a rack system to be sold by yourselves, that will fit into all kitchen cuboards so these bags can be easily stored and viewed, a bit like the slide on racks that you have for bags of sweets etc, this would save on the cost of tins and jars, save on waste for disposal and reduce weight and bulkiness for shoppers to carry, needing less carrier bags. Which all in all should reduce the cost to you and cost to the customers. Some soups/gravy already come in those style bags. You could gradually introduce the idea with at first bags and tins until the customer gets used to the change and gets the racks.
Hi ASDA Bright Ideas Team,
I have a bright idea, which would save money for ASDA, this will be better for the enviroment, be easy to implement and could be put on a trial across selected stores to see the reaction of the public before going nationwide. I would like to contact a member of the bright idea’s team for a discussion about idea direct. Could someone come back to me via e-mail, with contact details. I look forward to hearing your reply Tony Bennett
Why not install PIR sensors on travelators, so that they slow down, so as to not use so much energy carrying no one, yet be moving constantly and speeds up as someone approaches to get on one.
Also on the hot chicken counters / serve-over meat counters, why not make a rule to turn the units off when they are empty, for example over night?
EPOS, power down half of the checkouts over night a store with 70 checkouts turning 40 of these off would save 8kw/h, that’s 64KW over night, and 448KW over a week! This is already possible with the current technology we have in store! This saving based on 200watt per terminal.
Canteen TV set’s, put them on a PIR sensor so that they are only on and consuming energy when someone is actually watching / listening to it.
hi asda, am looking for a 3 bottle gift bag … you know how you sell 3 for £10, yeah !!! well I had to buy 3 bottles and 3 bags for the one person , not a good gift idea is it? cummon asda…and not just for xmas …all year round…where is the 3 bottle gift bag ???? remember you heard it here first !!!!!!!
How about if you cant do asda stores in spain, create a delivery sevice to certain drop off points. I have shopped at asda for many years and there are just not the right products here, i especially like george, electricals would sell well ( they are expensive here)
Some right loonies on here saying they want to meet up with the asda execs with there great ideas-made me chuckle. The sald bar sounds a popular choice.
Here is a strange one
Up and down the country there are thousands probably millions of huge motorway/dual carriageway signs with place names and distance in miles on. Driving on the opposite side of the carriageway you get to see the back of these signs which are empty. This is advertising space just going begging-masses of space to advertise products or local stores. Even buying the rights to this space and selling on the advertising space could make someone a pretty penny.
Hang on a moment, As this started or are you just picking our brains for all our good ideas?
Ok here is another idea that could help in selling goods. Having shopped at asdas many years have noticed people a lot of the time cannot reach the top shelfing thus cutting down your sales of these high items, I think you will have noticed things on top shelfing moves slower, and people don’t like to ask others. So here is the idea, have clearly marked step stools with pop down weels hanging around in this hard to reach areas. Punch line; We all need a step in the right direction from time to time.
Another saver that can save you big money and help poorer people. Insted of wasting food or sending it to landfill get an area within the store where bent tins and eat by todays can be sold really cheap keep it in local stores this food will go, ok you don’t get the same markup but then again your not throwing it away. The punch line; Eat today and save money, so we don’t have to wast it.
Hi Here is another idea for you to save loads of money per year by doing something that will cost you next to nothing and give you a more greener outlook. Walk into any store and look up, you will see a mass of lighting, you could easy remove lots of tubes say one in every three and still be lit up so everyones happy. The punch line; At Asdas we are not dim, we are full of bright ideas & by cutting our lighting we are cutting your shopping costs and helping to save our inviroment.
I absolutely luv asdas but the only thing my son ever insist on buying from another supermarket is a salad dish. Morrisons has the salad cart thing n Sainsburys 2 (with fruit). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can we have one in Asda? Wld make my life a lot easier!
Another useful idea for people who are living as an independant single person would be to review the line of tins and can goods so that half measures can be applied so that portions can be better suited for those individuals.
The same principal can be applied to other food and drink ranges.
A useful line for christmas would be a single persons christmas hamper. Also relatively usefull as a cheaper alternative for couples who are struggling financially.
have you thought about opening stores over here we have a very limeted choice of supermarkets margar;consum;mercadona;and dia.;eroski and lidl;they are all VERY EXPENSIVE even lidl .i watch the adverts on tv for all your wonderfull offers and wish there was a branch here .something needs to shake our supermarkets up with healthy competition .the clothes offered by you would also be a great offer as where we live if you are a size 18 plus you can forget getting anything decent .i have to wait till i go back to uk on holiday before i can buy new clothes.a lot of us expats all say the same things our nearest decent shop is in gibralter which is a 6 hour drive thats a morrisons ive only been there once and the turnover is unbelievable its heaving and needs to recieve fresh deliveries each day ..like everywhere else the unemployment here in roquetas de mar is very high so there would be a queue of people waiting to take on any vacancies myself included .anyway its just an idea i thought you may think over sorry to go on but i genuinely think this an idea worth thinking about . best regards mrs eileen wakeman
I think you should sell more items that are over in the states or in other shops that import Fizzy drink and American Candy, Tesco have started to introduce Krispy Kreme dougnuts and they have been a big hit in all of the tesco’s i’ve been to. I think you should sell Mountain dew that would be a big hit over here aswell as other american drinks/food just an Idea, I know I would certanly shop more
Thanks for listening
hi i have a slogan you may be interested in. i realise that you already have one however this could be used in tandem. if you are interested you can contact me to discuss or pass the details to the relivant dept . best regards rob.
I was sitting at home on Saturday, and realised that we needed shopping but I had missed the delivery time slots for that day, and didn’t fancy the bedlam of Saturday shopping.
So why can’t ASDA offer a pick up service? I do my online shopping at 12 – get to watch the football- then drive to my local Asda to collect my shopping at 3pm. I am happy because I am in and out within minutes, and as it is prepaid, you will cut down on queues. A reversal of Iceland’s home delivery, where we shop and they deliver, instead you shop and we collect, the supermarket equivalent of a Chinese Takeaway!
No other supermarket offers this, and I think it would be a good selling point.
Kind regards
An Idea for Asda your adverts need a little more umph, comparing yourself to other shops making them look bad and you look good by actually “naming and shaming” so to speak doesn’t endear ASDA to me when a company needs to do that it looses my respect and therefor my business.
I would much rather see a company being actually creative in its advertising then resorting to that kind of advertising. Tesco’s and Sainsburies and Morrisons may be your competitors however watching your ad makes me want to go shop at them by far more then shop at a store that resorts to that kind of advertising.
HI there I go to your store 3 and 4 times a week and every time I go look at the clothes department only to fined that you do’nt have my size in stock. I think it would be a good thing to have larger sizes in trousers with 29” legs then I would leave happy not sad.
I agree with louise jagger, why don’t you have a loyalty card, I have just been informed ASDA card are increasing the rates, and have cancelled my card as interest rates are the lowest ever, and at time when everyone needs every penny, I do not believe the rate should be increase. When I spoke to the provider their representative informed me ASDA were fully aware of the increase. Now if ASDA had a loyalty card, it would ASDA and the customer who would benefit.
a computer terminal or pda’s that the produce staff could access on the shopfloor giving recipes, presentation pictures, cooking and eating ideas on fruit and veg that the customer might be willing to try but are unsure how to. With the increase in tv cooking shows and customers willing to be more adventurous in their eating, having the information to help them within easy reach would in return increase sales and raise thelevel of customer service.
Why not put your stores and fuel stations in a satnav POI format so that when people go to an area they are not famiar with they can find your nearest store?
why do you not have a loyalty scheme? i have always been an Asda shopper, and spent a small fortune in the george department. but as times get harder people look for benefits from doing their shopping. i myself now get petrol from another supermarket because i get £5 vouchers to spend in store, and do my big shop from another supermarket to get clubcard points, i, unfortunatley only now shop at asda for the essentials due to convenience as it’s only a 5 min walk. the way i see it and probably a lot of others do as well, your going to spend the money cause you need food and petrol, you may as well get something back in return.
I notice you have indicated that this starts next year and to watch this space for more inforamtion, so all these bright ideas listed in the comments will not be rewarded as it isn’t to start until you announce the launch of bright ideas? At the moment any rival company (eg Tesco’s) can look at this site (which they do) and steel the ideas left already. I have two very good ideas which I am happy to discuss with you once the ‘Bright Ideas’ starts officially.
WHY NOT CHARGE FOR PARKING IN THE CAR PARKS WITH THE SHOPPERS BEING ABLE TO GET A REFUND FOR PARKING FOR THE FIRST 2 HOURS OF PARKING, THIS WILL STOP OTHER WORKERS IN THE TOWNS FROM PARKING FOR FREE WHILST THEY ARE AT WORK AND COST SHOPPERS NO EXTRA MONEY THE CHECKOUT OPERATORS WILL HAVE TO REMIND PEOPLE ABOUT THE REFUND EXTRA PARKING FEES WILL PAY FOR PAEKING ATTEMDANTS TO ISSUE FIXED PENALTY TICKETS ETC
THIS DOES WORK AT OTHER STORES
I spend most of my life in Spain. There are literally Thousands of Brits living there, have you not considered doing “ASDA OVERSEAS”. We already have Iceland Overseas & the store is never empty,it has taken off BIG STYLE,even the Spanish people shop there. Do your homework, don’t take my word for it. Our largest store in Torrevieja is “Carrefour” some of their prices are extortionate. We also have Lidl & Aldi but Iceland seems to have the monopoly. At least consider this suggestion, you have nothing to loose & everything to gain.
Have wind turbines to generate electricity to help power stores.
I think the store in spondon is second to non, I am welcomed and helped if I need any help the tsalls are clearly marked and all the staff have a smile for everyone their choice not yours so pass on my thanks to them.
I would have thought though, that the boss at all your outlets would fit a you are here sign electronic, so you can find at an instance the kind of goods you are looking for.Just press a button punch in what you are looking for and get a route on screen showing you the directions, in all your stores speed will inhance your sales and stop people from leaving in frustration got to be a winner do you not think
2 things, when I shop online and the groceries are delivered why cant they have a longer best before date, after all we tend to shop for a week and a 2 or 3 day best before date is no good at all and puts people off from on line shopping, if they knew they would get the same best before date as you get in store if you went yourself you would get more on line shoppers. And where do you get e vouchers, you see a space to enter a code every time you shop on line but no infomation as to where or how you get them, again if this is made more clear I am sure you would get more people to shop on line, in this day and age of more people using computers this must bring you in more money and ease the check out staff at stores. Thanks J, Wood
I support people who have learning disabilities to shop and be as independent as possible. This means that they buy there own groceries and one of the problems they encounter is the amount of fresh food that goes to waste, because the bags of ready prepared salad or the large sizes of fruit and veg e.g. cabbage, lettuce, cucumber as even half a cucumber can be to large. It would be nice if their was a smaller bag of prepared veg that people who are catering for themselves could buy. Maybe then there would not be so much food waste.
Recycle each stores rain water to flush their toilets. This could be done by connecting piping to the gutters and sending the rain water to a central water storage system. Then toilets could be conected. Saving water and money. Reducing ASDA’s carbon footprint and increasing their ECO policy. Call it H20GO.
Have a coffee bar at the entrance to an Asda ie in the car park. A mobile big van, have a few seats and a covered area. This would allow husbands to sit with the kids while the wife can concentrate on the important weekly shop. OR the wifes’ can sit while the husbands’ shop. Could even have childrens’ DVD’s showing to keep them entertained. Could also sell donuts, muffins etc. Call it CHILAX@ASDA. This would make shopping more relaxed and stressed free !!
At the checkout today, I forgot my bags again. As always, i left them in the car. when chatting to your cashier she said that many others make the same comment. my idea is that you should have signs throughout the car park, at the trolley stations and a the entrance simply saying ‘dont forget your bags’. I am sure this would make many people go back to their cars and get the bags that live in their boot.
Hi Chris from Newport
I though it may to your advantage if the pharmacy was moved more central in the pencarn branch maybe near the checkouts i.e. where the hairdressers used to be instead of tucked away in the corner
I’m a Malaysian who now reside in West Sussex, England. First of all I must congratulate ASDA for your new world food store. This makes thousands of people like me feel at home.
The reason for my email is, I have a (Malaysian) food recipe which I thought would be in line with your world food theme. I don’t see this food being sold in any of the supermarket in the UK. It is quite famous is Malaysia and most of South East Asian countries. I always cook this recipe when I invite my English friends for a meal. And it is always well received. I was also asked by many of my friends to cook this recipe for their parties & dinners. This recipe can be bottled and preserved. I would be delighted if this can be introduced to ASDA store. I just want to know whom to contact if I have new food / recipe ideas. Do you have any reward scheme for new food ideas being introduced by it’s own customers?
Thanks
i like to make money all the time. So i feel asda should have its own money making scheme on the side which will have a good affect on the company.
In recent times we are unable to buy p g tips loose tea in any size plenty of yorkshire tea (horrible). Your competitors keep all sizes perhaps you should bring it back (and give me a percentage for reminding you). Oh well off to terrible tesco.
Oki this idea will be more innovative for the marketing department as they the people which drives the business ahead. So i was thinking introduce an “Telemarketing” serive into the business which can surely save on the marketing expenses and will give the same quality or even more if its given in to the right hand of telemarketing industry (i can name some with “Promising Quality and lead generation”.All the customer service/after hours sales and many more can be handle with them with a very lil cost on the pocket. I can elaborate more and break down on how they can “ASDA” save more money. And it will be guaranteed :O)).
I really wish you could organise a self service salad bar. I speak to friends and family and they all agree that we like to choose our own ingredients. It’s a nuisance to get the weekly shop from asda then traipse into morrisons to buy a salad. I,m sure there are many more householders who feel the same. Hoping you can help.
R.C. Stephenson.
hello again i thought i would tell you now anyway as i am likely tto forget i thought an idea with packaging is for asda fresh bread you could put it in paper bags in stead of plastic this keeps it just as fresh , saves money and is greener . and i also thought that on things like trifle instead of using the plastic casing and the strip of cardboard around it telling you what it is you could have this infomation printed on the plastic. i also think that the create your own pizzas could have the carboard strip taken away as you know whats on them just by looking maybe you could just send through to the checkouts how many pizzas one person had and give everyone a number so that when they went to the checkout the casshiers would anllready know how much that person owed for a machine that you could use to do thid it would most likely be costly but in the long run would save you a lot of money thanks for reading linzi x
i think i have a good idea well two good ideas both of which will reduce your carbon footprint and save you money in a short amount of time for example having your cereal in just a plastic bag instead of a plastic bag and a cardboard box saved you money as you didnt have to pay for carboard packaging and made asda a greener store over all. i would prefer to contact someone personally instead of placing my ideas on here if thats ok. linzi .
How about sorting out your web and telephone systems. I have just spent an hour trying to find out when I might receive my next Asda (Santander) credit card bill. I shall not have any difficulty paying it providing it reaches me!
My first idea is like woolworths once had, the pic, n ,mix, how frustrating is it for parents when they are out shopping as soon as you reach the confectionery isle all you hear is them say “i want this and i want that” its just so much easier instead of having to buy different bags to keep them happy. 99% of the time you know they won,t stop until you finally give in. Secondly David O’Rafferty suggested the idea about electric devices for the layout as to where your items are. Aswell as that maybe consider having the electrical price check machines on the pillars spread around the store, maybe one on each isle. If this was to be considered it would need to be at a reasonable height, i.e, your disabled customers who are in wheelchairs or on scooters. Last idea would be, when i was on holiday i saw in their supermarkets that for hygiene reasons all customers must wear gloves when handling all loose fruit and veg. I find it disgusting when i reach that section and you see people picking through the food ( you don,t know where they,re hands have been). Asda staff wear gloves when handling our food especially the fruit and veg, i think we should follow this idea. This it isn,t about me its about everybody. MORE IMPORTANTLY ITS ABOUT HYGIENE, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT BEFORE YOU START PICKING THROUGH THESE ITEMS!!!!
I often forget my reusable ASDA bags in the car and don’t realise until I arrive at the checkout to pay. Suggest placing visible signs in prominent customer areas ie on entrace to ASDA car parks, entry into the store, etc . A simple but cost effective way to reduce use of carrier bags.
Have fast food take away ie hot dogs, burgers chips. Have a window in the cafe so it could be like a drive through. Quick turn around food when you have to eat in your feet. Name it ASDA SNAPPY. Funky, cheap, quick food for a fast society.
Why not offer a ‘scoop and weigh’ type facility for some of your dry consumables. This used to be quite popular, but I don’t see it anymore. I’ve seen this done in supermarkets in France. There, they have ‘hopper’ style containers that you place your bag under and pull the lever – this means no hygiene problems. It’s self-serve so no staff costs. Weigh your product and print off the appropriate sticker.
Perfect for the eco-friendly, budget-savvy shopper! Saves packaging, saves waste. Imagine – this could be done with breakfast cereals, pasta, flour, pet food even washing powder! Asda own brands all the way!
Takes up less space for the store, therefore saving you money and saves on your packaging costs too.
Clothes scrapage scheme – similar to the car scrapage scheme. Bring in an old pair of jeans get 50p of a new pair. Same with jumpers and coats. Then the scrapped clothes are sent for recycling and the money given to charity. Promotes awareness for charity and helps the consumer. Call the scheme CASH 4 FASH.
5 Fruit Fun Packs Get 5 fruits from a range of fruits, pop it in 1 recycled paper bag. Let the paper bags have funky designs on that the kids can relate to. Charge say 50p for the bag. Use the smaller fruits usually rejected by supermarkets. This would promote healthy eating and also ASDA’s eco policies. Run a competition so that children can name and create identities for the various fruits. Food should be fun as well as healthy.
Why not try using recycled cardboard coat hangers in store to display George clothes. This should be better than the traditional plastic coat hangers and after use customers could recycle them at home in their bue bin. They could also be colour coded depending on which range of clothes they are ie mens, womens and childrens. Mens area could be blue, womens pink and childrens red. This would make these areas more visible than they are now. Also try to get schools involved by letting them design a coat hanger. The winning child having their designed rolled out over all the ASDA stores. This would highlight ASDA’s green policy and make children more aware of the need to recycle.
Why not have recycled brown carrier bags like in America. To cover the cost of production of these have a sponsor on 1 side ie Coca Cola, duracell etc and on the other side make it plain that its an ASDA recycled bag. Then once you have used them you can pop them in your own blue bin at home or reuse them. These I would think would be more eco friendly than plastic carrier bags.
people often ask me what season’s i use when i cook my traditional dish, fry chicken/rice and peas. And other Caribbean dishes. i would like to show u how by making them ready mixed with recipe step by step guide.
Why not sell collapsable trolly’s that people can put in to the back of their cars. When they get to the supermarket they simply unfold/unpack/extend the folding plastic trolly fill it up instore and when they get back to the car collapse down the handle / wheels and lift it in to the boot.
That way you can reduce the amount of metal trollys you need to manufacture, buy, replace, store and repair and instead make a profit from re-usable trolly sales!
The customer also doesn’t have to faff about with packing and carrying loads of bags. So you also eliminate the carrier bag problem.
Smaller stores = lower overheads.
So why not introduce an ASDA catalogue and checkout system like the ones you find in Argos?
That way, you won’t need as much space to display all of your homeware and electricals. It might also mean you could sell even LARGER ranges.
In the space you ‘free-up’ in existing stores you could introduce areas where customers can get information on healthy eating, watch live demos on how to prepare healthy or varied meals, sample new ranges etc. This sort of initiative would probably make you eligable for some form of tax benefit, would be great PR and would be a great form of fun, interactive in-store promotion to keep people in the store longer.
Don’t print any till receipts!
Instead take the email addresses of each of your customers and email them their bill from the till.
This way you not only save on paper, printing and the potential cost of servicing, but you capture the email adresses of millions of customers who may not register with you online and can e-market to them, saving you even more money as you won’t have to rent or buy data from third parties.
To avoid the problem of customers getting home and finding the receipt doesn’t marry up to the items they have bought (E.g. charged the wrong price) turn the till screen around to face the customer so they can see each item as it’s processed and the total including all offers and savings. To verify the sale they enter their email address before the receipt is sent.
ASDA is opening today in Ashington, Northumberland. I work at Wansbeck General Hospital, one mile from ASDA and my colleagues and I would love to visit Asda on a regular basis, ideally in our lunch break, but unfortunately if we take our car from the car park the space is took immediately, therefore, we tend to shop on our way home, obviously calling at a shop in our home vicinity.
There are hundreds of employees working at Wansbeck and there is nowhere to buy a loaf of bread in a mile radius. The staff at Wansbeck would be grateful if you could consider a means of transport from Wansbeck General to ASDA to do their shopping.
I have a brilliant money saving idea which is so obvious I am surprised they haven’t done it. I will certainly be suggesting it when the bright idea service is launched.
why not use plastic bottles for asda own brand spirits, they do this abroad. i work for asda and see alot of waste where bottles are dropped and smashed accidently. it doesnt affect the taste as i have bought them back from holiday, plastic must surely be cheaper than also the bags would be a lot lighter for customers without heavy bottles to carry.
why not charge customers one pound parking fee refundable if they use their own bags saving the company money and helping the enviroment..
Our company has a new LED light that is designed for us in warehouses where a 400W or 250W son would be used. We would like to talk to someone at Asda and show you how you can reduce your carbon footprint even more as well as save money. plesae feel free to contact me at the above email. Thank you Steve Smith
on your fish section, why dont you save the fish heads, tails, and off cuts of fish, for the fishermen who would gladly pay for them. instead of having lots of fish waste.
Save £2M every year! Turn your lights off. If every ASDA store became pitch-black when it was closed, the power you would save would easily total over £2M per year. If you married this idea with wind turbines at each of your major 24hr stores the excess electricity produced could be sold to the power stations earning up to an extra £1M per year. This would save ASDA a lot of money… When do I receive the £100,000? P
hi my husband and i have came up with an idea why dont you have a fresh bag and sandwich counter so people could get a nice fresh roll or baguette made for you in front of you at reasonable prices
wrapping eggs in bubble wrap to reduce the amount off egg loss and when the wine is on the shelves having displays with a little front so it would elimanate bottles being knocked off that would probably save a huge amount of money
Can Someone Please Start To Manufacture Toilet Brush Replacement Heads. We Simply Unscrew The Head From The Arm And Replace. It Saves Money And Cuts Down On Having To Replace The Entire Unit Every Time We Need A New Brush Helping Reduce Recycling As Well As Helping Our World Enviroment And Hygiene Standards In Our Bathrooms. For Stainless Steel Versions Which Tend To Rust Quicker Externally Due To Water Vapour Exposure A Plastic Coating Or Lacquer Should Help Give Them A Longer Shelf Life. We Are Told To Replace Our Toothbrushes Every 3 Months And So It Should Be For Toilet Brushes Also As These Are Made Of Plastic Bristles Too.
There are no ASDA stores with George in the whole of Oxfordshire! Open a store of some sort in Didcot, there are two huge ASDA distribution centres there and you would save us all money travelling to Swindon or buying online and returning items which do not fit. There is plenty of land next to each of the Didcot distribution centres for a medium to large store.
It’s time to update your till reciepts. Think about it.
Stop printing the full product GLN on every till reciept, for reference you only need the last 6 digits, or even none at all, since the transactions is already stored on your network. Basically your till reciepts look ugly, and the information is of not interst to you customers.
Reduce the width of the paper, and you will save money on the till rolls, you will save paper which is better for the environment, you will save money on the ink you are wasting, the reciepts will print faster, and you will save energy too.
Hope to see you put this into practice soon.
Why not set up a card for students that parents can top up at their local store and the student can use to buy groceries at their local store like sainsburys do, that way we can ensure our chidren have access to food at more realistic prices.
Hi i was thinking why dont you maybe try and see if you can get a drink that they drink in the states called Mountain Dew(MNT dew) its a really nice drink i highly recomend that one also Rootbeer which is also a soft drink as well Also maybe Reeses Buttercups they are lovely sweets as well its just food and drink for thought. I defantly would buy both if its at a reasonable price here..
i think asda should wide the tills so people can get throught with there shopping and all so think you should have card where collect point like sainburys and tesco do so you should do it
I have a business idea that I’d like to share with you – not for any gain of my own other than to help me receive my personal mail timely …. Bear with me as the idea may seam a little mad at first.
Supermarket Postal Services ? I travel the M5 daily and see your trucks every few hundred miles, I also shop in your stores upto twice a week.
As you are travelling up and down motorways accross the country and virtually every person in England has a Asda Store within traveling distance why not offer a postal service. Customers hand their post at standard postal charges to your stores for delivery, you deliver to the local store of the recipient. You now have two people visiting your store regularly and hence will possibly shop in your store at the same time.
I have to say as a UK consumer I am getting very fed up with striking staff and poblems with the Royal Mails services, I just think that Asda manages to get everything else right …why not this too?
Thanks for Reading
Claire
Would it be possible to have a slip road constructed off the A52 slip road into the Asda Spondon car park. I know a lot of people who shop elsewhere as they do not want to queue in traffic at peak times. It is only a matter of a few metres from the slip road into the car park and this would also ease the congestion on the island, as a good percentage of traffic is heading for your store. Another point I would like to make, is about something I noticed whilst shopping in your store today. There is an item on display that is marked up as £1 for a 150ml bottle. The price per 100ml is 66.7p but the bottle in question only contains 50ml and no other product is in within the area, so I dont think it could be for anything else Another confusing thing I found was that there are some things that come in multiple packs but are priced differently.i.e 2 x kitchen rolls @ £1.67. Price per item £1.67 4 x kitchen rolls @ £2.50. Price per item 62.5p
on your website when shopping you should have a box you can tick so when the item comes on special offer or is reduced you are informed by an email, also i belive the price of delivery is too high you should introduice free deliverry for customers who spend £30 or more, iceland do this if you spend £25 and reward you with vouchers for shopping with them.
Nice logo, thought it seems you’re trying to look like M&S? Originality is always best, particularly when you are on a mission to update and change your brand image.
the sandwich section of asdas is great….im thinking lots of people would buy these if they could get to the asda store in their lunchbreak…what if you take the sandwich section to them? in a mobile sandwich van..this van tours the stores local industrial estates, same principle as an ice cream van….
everyone loves a game and something for free….once/twice a day a designated checkout point would become FREE….meaning the lucky customer going through it at that time would get their shopping free….its…SHOPPING LOTTERY
It would be great If asda had play areas like they do abroad where parents supervise, so It Is not a staffing issue. I find It hard at times shopping with a 4 year old that as problems, imagine having an autistic child to shop with, where has If there was a play area one parent could supervise whilst the other parent could have quality shopping time. I know I would probabley end up buying more, but instead I rush around to get the shopping done before we have a difficult session
Remove the speed bumps recently installed at your Watford store.Save damage to vehicles, damage to the environment and most of all stop people transferring to car friendly stores.
In each fashion department, it’s hard to picture what some styles will look like,as you don’t have dressables/displays instore. You have so many colours and options and customers need help to put items/outfits together. So have a large visual screen on each department with rotating visual collections or a fashion show/runway on screen selling the new lines into the store and the prices. Slow moving items could be highlighted on the screen or as a promotion on the screen too.
Have a ‘food advisor’ walking the store dressed as a chef , butcher , greengrocer ,vitner. Asking customers if they can be of assistance , recomending the best offers or suggest ideas for meal occasions
Why not have crushable items such as flowers and eggs at the back end of the supermarket, so that when you go round getting everything else, they don’t get crushed? It may not save you money, but it will stop customers wasting money on crushed eggs / fruit & veg and flowers…. It’s really annoying when all the heavy stuff, like alcohol / drinks etc is normally on the last aisles so that all the rest of your shopping is crushed. It would also make sense to have the frozen stuff to the back end as well, as a weekly shop can take an hour, if not more, and the food is already thawing whilst you’re picking up your loo roll etc…
Also, could the trolleys have bar code scanners on them, so that when you put the item in your trolley it’s automatically scanned and weighed, therefore when you take the trolley to the checkout, the til’s computer scans the trolley and charges you there and then – thus saving on customer queues and will save the store money on checkout assitants.
thanks Jo
I agree with david (above) you should implement interactive product location screens in your stores. I work for tesco, there every product is already mapped (assume asda is the same) and can be searched at the customer service desk, where the computer prints of a slip telling the staff, the quantity, the next due delivery and the exact location, including the aisle, module and shelf number. this type of software would be so helpfull if made available to customers especially in the really big stores.
Thanks for all your great suggestions – it just goes to show why Bright Ideas will be great for everyone. To those who have asked questions, as you may have seen in our post we’re pre-announcing the scheme so you can get your thinking caps on, but we’re still working through the details of exactly how it will work. We’ll post these as soon as we have them, but the scheme itself will launch formally next year. Thanks!
To encourage people to eat 5-a day. You should make several bags that contain 5-a day in, whether it fruit or veg or a mixture of both. They could be seasonal and local varieities, for example in August, only use summer fruits. Larger bags could be made for adults or even families and smaller for children!. Hope this hasnt been mentioned before!
Alex
It would be a good idea to have a self service Salad bar, like they do at Morrisons Stores
I have a bright and proven idea [...] but is the scheme open to colleagues or just customers?
dear sir i visit my local asda store maybe three times a week the first thing you see is the fruit and veg i have noticed that asda is interducing many excotic fruits from abroad they look very nice on display but to the shopper they dont know what they are and where there from or how they taste or how you cook them can i suggest that you have a small tasting counter along with some recipies you would then see those fruits fly out the door thanks for your time james
what date is the scheme being launched? How long do you have to wait before receiving 5%? What happens if two people have the same idea? Thanks in advance, Tim
When ordering food items online for home delivery the food could come with a longer use by date instead of 2 days which is no good for a weeks shop.
Also when ordering items with security cases or tags to take them off before delivering them or at least give the drivers facilities to remove at the door
The entrance/exit doors are a nightmare. People tend to use the door nearest the car park both for entering and leaving. It would be sensible to use one of the three large windows (one of which has incorporated an emergency exit door) that are situated by the check outs so people leaving could do so without having to struggle against people just arriving.
I have an idea to revalucionise the whole shopping experience in a supermarket.I would like to talk my idea thro with someone at asda head office. It is also the solucion to the plastic bag problem. Where do I go ,who do I speak to.
Hello, Firstly, I wold suggest to have more unwraped food displayed in a nice corner of your stores with a certain decoration to attract people to buy more healthy. Secondly, I would have crates and bags of the same colour for recycling, e.g., yellow for food, green for PVC recyclable, brown for packs (Muesli, etc.), etc. Thridly, to have your name displayed on the road advertised on DIFT (Digital Information for Tourists) where the first page would be your offers and products with maps where to find you. These DIFT could be placed on parkings, and on other places of interest for visitors to see YOU, so it will increase your revenue.
Hi Delia, I think you may mean the TellAsda site at www.tellasda.com. This is an ongoing customer satisfaction survey but it’s also the best way of providing feedback or suggestions to individual stores as it’s closely monitored by all our local managers. Hope this helps. Thanks!
I live in Spain but shop at West Boldon Asda with my family when I am in the Uk which is quite often. I saw a banner asking for ideas for the new store in South Shields when we visited there but cannot remember the email address. I want to contact the store with an idea. Can you help? I thought it was tellittoasda but that brought no response from my search engine.
I have looked for an email address and this is all I could find. Australia needs your clothes I have been here 3 years and I am ashamed to say I am still wearing Asda knickers from before I moved here. I would like the correct email address to contact someone in your clothing department. I know loads of people that just want your clothes over here and I would love it if I could place orders (mainly sales stuff and clearence) to start with. I would like to be able to buy in small bulk to start with say a few hundered pounds and sell your clothes on here. Obviously once I have started to trade the orders would be for more. Could you please let me know what postage and packing would be by sea to start as I dont have a lot of money to set this all up. We are also comming into our summer as you are going into winter so I would not need the stock straight away.
This is a serious request I have been buying items for myself, having them sent to my family to post out to me and my friends love your clothes. You can not get the designs or quality here and I do not want to have to go down the buying from China route.
The women of Australia need your clothes, please help me to make this a reality.
Thanking you in advance
Sue
Are there any plans to open an ASDA on the Isle of Wight. It would save us all a fortune!!!
What about plastic troleys they would have to be made out of the same material as plastic baskets the wheels, handles and chain would all have to be made out of metal. What do you think?
please put some perspex angled at end of conveyer to scanner to stop goods clogging up.and if you have any jobs for a person thats disabled please let me know.many thanks
Hello Have you bought a toothbrush recently? Did you have fun trying to get it out of the packaging? Please.please, please can you design some simple packaging that firstly costs less, and secondly can be opened without struggling! I feel sorry for those less nimble! mayy thanks
I have a fantastic and very urgent huge moneysavings tip to your particular store. Believe me, it needs to be carried out well before Christmas or else we the law abiding citizens pay extra every day or all the items. I cannot of course write here but need to either meet up with some executive etc. Please get in touch with me. thank you.
The freezer/chilled isles of the supermarket could be partitioned off. This would isolate the chilled isles from the rest of the store, thereby reducing refrigeration costs, as the transfer of heat from surrounding room temperature parts would be reduced. The partitions/doors coulds be glass to allow customers to see inside.
Occasionally, we receive an offers leaflet delivered with the local free newspaper. I have started an independent publication distribution business and would be interested in collaborating with Asda in delivering these leaflets in the Blackburn with Darwen area. Our delivery rates are very competitive and I’m sure you could find hundreds of similar small businesses around Britain. Individually, I can’t save you millions, but collectively, local research by your branches could achieve massive savings on your leaflet advertising.
Why not have a webcam in EVERY store giving a panorama view so customers can see how busy the story is in real time so they can decide whether to shop at that time?
SOMETIMES I FIND IT DIFFICULT FINDING PRODUCTS DESPITE YOUR AILSE BILLBOARDS AND WASTE TIME GOING AROUND AND AROUND UNTIL EVENTUALLY I HAVE TO ASK ONE OF YOUR STAFF FOR ASSISTANCE. WOULD IT BE EASIER ALL ROUND IF THERE WERE ONE OR TWO COMPUTER POINTS WHERE I COULD INPUT WHAT EXACTLY I AM LOOKING FOR GIVING ME ITS EXACT LOCATION INSTEAD OF INTERUPTING YOUR STAFF FROM THEIR DUTIES.
In store your staff spend loads of time taking customers to an item they cannot find. Why not have simple electronic product locators dotted around the store. These would be simple flat screens where a customer could locate their item on the virtual shop and then be directed to the product. A map could even say ‘You are here’, and a path to the item with isle number and position in the isle.
As a customer I don’t want to ask a staff member to leave what they are doing and trail around the shop with me, it’s embarrassing.
The amount of staff tied up leading customers around the shop is a bind on your resources.
Many thanks

I wear cuff links on all my shirts and usually buy them from Tesco whose standard shirts are designed for buttons or cuff links. Could I ask that you look at the design and add in Cuff link holes as standard please
